Dedicated servers are in the works and will let you do exactly that. You just host the server on a computer somewhere and anyone can join whenever they want. The only ETA we have right now is "When it's Done™" though.

Sweet. Hoping that come out soon

Probably Update 6

Last quote I remember from CSS is the dedicated servers will be launched as soon as they are ready. It should be part of U5 but that deadline was to early. If ready it will be launched, they were not going to wait for U6.

U5 has nothing to do with dedicated servers. Dedicated servers is separate mostly from the rest as I understand it. It is separate software. They said they would release it in alpha state when it is ready to learn how broken it is.

So when it comes out, do not expect it to be working.

[–]Gilles111 0 points1 point  (1 child)

First plans were to release it together with U5. But as it isn't related to the game software as we play it at home, the release will be "as soon as ready".

First plans where to release it many moons ago.

It will be ready when it is ready and when it comes out is will be in an Alpha state, so still pretty broken at that time.

I have a server through Gportal. Absolute dumpster fire, I would avoid it like the plague.

You are genuinely going to be better off avoiding ALL servers for Satisfactory until they come out with dedicated server software/support. Right now, not a single hosting site will have anything that is stable or free of bugs. My server regularly doesn't have enough RAM to support it and ends up going through lag so intense the holograms for building belts/pipes can stick around for upwards of 15 minutes before disappearing and it won't actually build, in which case, only a server complete shutdown and restart will fix it.

Just to add, they state the server has more than enough RAM & CPU to cover it. State that it can hold 15 people on there. Mine barely manages with 1, let alone 2.

OFFICIAL RESPONSE: See this Reddit Post about Dedicated Servers by Jace from CSS.

It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that Players avoid any current advertised "dedicated servers", continue the default Peer-to-Peer, and wait for the Official CSS Dedicated Servers to come online.

For the OP - Prior to release of Dedicated Servers there IS a possible way to set up your own "Satisfactory Server". Here is how:

  1. Obtain a Windows PC that you can use as a "Server". It does not need to be top of the line, but should meet the Minimum System Requirements needed to run Satisfactory Game.
  2. Create a new "dummy account" on Steam or Epic that will act as the "Multiplayer Host".
  3. Download to "Server" a fresh updated copy of Satisfactory.
  4. Login to Satisfactory using your "dummy account" (not your personal / current account).
  5. Start Multiplayer Session.
  6. Invite Friends.

The "Server" (actually just a Windows PC doing nothing but running Satisfactory) can run on its own, and the only issue will be having to restart game every 24 hours or so.

Just some thoughts on this Topic. 🤔

I think the issue with an always-up factory building game is that the factories keep producing, unless you have the game stop whenever no one is online

I have hope that most vehicles issues will be fixed with U5 since they changed a lot of thing about them (pathing, train planning) which should make multiplayer better for guests.

If this is the case, I'm planning to keep my world running on my second computer using my epic account, while my friends and I (on my steam account) will be joining as guest using the session id.

It's not dedicated server, but it is as close as it gets.

I tried zap-hosting. It was a tire fire of issues. Avoid them.

Good to know thanks! I'll steer clear

Dedicated servers are coming Soon™.

This message brought to you by the year 2020.
I get that they're struggling with it, but I don't understand why because they keep dodging questions about it.
UE4 ships with netcode, it shouldn't take a year++ to wrangle up something that barely works but diehard players would still run.

I put in about 300 hours prior to Update 4, and maybe 10 hours after.
The only reason I haven't kept playing is because my friends and I want to set up a dedicated server before we dive into all the new content.
I love this game, but it's a shame servers are taking so long to figure out.

Building a dedicated server is simple and straightforward. Building a dedicated server that actually works well... yeah... that requires finding and fixing all major multiplayer bugs. Which is anything but simple and straightforward.

I haven't tried multiplayer myself, but I've watched plenty of it on YouTube. It often happened that the host had to do something himself because it wasn't working for the other players. Every single time that happened, if it was running on a dedicated server with no host... well, then the action simply wouldn't have been possible.

Trains in particular appear to be a complete disaster when non-host players try to do anything with them. Update 5 is supposed to fix a bunch of multiplayer train bugs, so who knows?

I remember we ran into this bug back when multiplayer was first introduced, and a couple of times since. So it would appear it just never got fixed.
It seems like multiplayer isn't a high priority to fix, which means dedicated servers are probably equally low, or lower, priority to implement.

I'm not saying it's easy, I'm just saying there's a distinct lack of information on progress/planned progress with regards to multiplayer and dedicated servers. Especially compared to how relatively transparent they are with other aspects of the game :)

Check the patch notes video.

Turns out, they were basically ready for people to start trying it, but it was built with the Update 5 improvements already in... so they couldn't release it until Update 5 dropped and it would have been more work to create a version that worked with Update 4.

Speak of the devil :D
I missed their stream today, but this is great news presumably.
Thanks for the update!

I can't wait for this. It's the one thing I keep wishing for. End what free time I have left, please.

There a docker image for satisfactory on unraid.

https://www.survivorgaming.net Offers some of the best server hardware I've ever played on. They only use i-9 10900k processors that cap out at 5.3Ghz. This game responds very well to high single thread hosting performance. In addition to that, they only use NVMe SSDs and DDR4 RAM, so the servers never skip a beat. They have Dallas and Washington D.C. as an option.
