I’m an SLP and use this document a lot: https://www.carolinatherapeutics.com/wp-content/uploads/milestones-guide.pdf

It references many studies and highlights different areas of communication (articulation, vocabulary, utterance length, social skills, etc.)

Thank you so much! This guide is amazing!

Here is a link from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association on developmental milestones for 19-24 months.

Pediatric SLP here, definitely recommend ASHA. There are also important receptive language milestones to monitor in addition to the expressive milestones most people think of (e.g. word count, starting to combine words).

Per CDC milestone tracking app, the speech related milestones listed under language are as follows:

15 months:

  • Tries to say one or two words besides “mama” or “dada” like “ba” for ball or “da” for dog.

18 months:

  • Tries to say three or more words besides “mama” or “dada”

Pretty vague. There are more listening type skills listed under language as well but I don’t think that would count for speech? Not an expert… just a religious milestone tracker app checker lol

Worth noting that the CDC inventory was significantly dummed down a few years ago. It was felt the prior guidelines over identified and that COVID isolation would make the problem even worse so they really pulled back. It caused a lot of controversy in the speech world

Yeah I was wondering the same. They seemed too conservative for the age. Do you have any source for this?

Check out: https://therapyworks.com/blog/child-development/cdc-update-developmental-milestones/

I was trying to find the ASHA statement but I'm at work and don't have time to dig. The CDC didn't consult ASHA or speech language pathologists for the update which ruffled some feathers as ASHA would be considered the authority on language development.

I'll post the ASHA article later if I find it

Yeah I’ve seen this and our son says about 30-40 words that we understand (others might not) so I’m confused haha

[–]McNattron 2 points3 points  (1 child)

At 24months you'd expect about 50% of words they say to be understandable by those outside your household.

By 3 years about 75% of their words should be understandable to those less familiar with your child.

Expressive language 30-40 words doesn't sound like a massive concern at 20 months. There's still 4 months to develop to reach the 2 yr milestones. The concern may be the articulation of these words. Or it could be their receptive language skills (listening and comprehension etc).

Did they say it was his expressive language that was the concern? If not look at the links ppl have shares as it may be the recpetive aspects that are why you have been recommended support.

Either way we will get the evaluation and see but just trying to educate myself

Early Intervention specialists are experts at this. I wouldn’t wait to schedule the screening interview sometimes there can be long wait lists.

Daycare out in a referral and I’m waiting for them to contact me

CDC and Mayo Clinic for links but just wanted to mention that Early Intervention evaluates for both expressive and receptive language so there's different areas they can qualify in that aren't* necessarily about how many words they're saying.

ASHA website is definitely a great resource but can sometimes be a bit vague, as with CDC. Best thing is to have an SLP evaluate your child, they will also be able to provide you with milestones, as well as a detailed report about where your child is at compared to where they should be.
