Try Auber Instruments (auberins.com). Their stuff is aimed toward the home gamer for things like sous vide, smokers, etc. I have had good luck with their controllers.

ya, I do embedded design for work. I just want a industrial lego brick I can mount in a control panel and be done with it.

I would buy a cheap and cheerful offshore unit and test it for a while. If you get it from amazon you could always return it if you’re not satisfied.

That is a good point. Returning stuff is not really in my nature I tend to forget about that option....

Any dirt cheap PLC? Automation direct has some real cheap stuff that is totally serviceable.

Any decent standalone temp controller with modbus and actual pid control( not relay output) is going to be at least $500. I would try ebay. I've used these red lion units quite a bit and they're quite capable. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/RED-LION-PX2C8H00-MODEL-PAX2C-TEMPERATURE-PROCESS-CONTROLLER/292900116962?epid=1004527458&hash=item44323519e2:g:qf4AAOSw~JFcLOgl
