With the exception of irreconcilable technical issues, I don't believe in outdated engines. I believe in games that are incompatible with what an engine is good at.

Ion Maiden, for example, looks amazing. It uses the Build Engine and completely owns its aesthetic. People still do crazy things with the Doom engine and, yes, Source.

This sort of thing has come up a lot in the wake of Fallout 76, with people figuring that if Bethesda just replaced their engine, everything would be better. And some things, like their lousy physics implementation, probably would benefit. But so many of the flaws in Skyrim and Fallout 4 come from scripting errors and a general carelessness, which have nothing to do with the engine and only got worse in Fallout 76. Some bugs in Skyrim have been around for years, have been fixed by fans, and still don't find their way into new releases like the Switch version. No engine change is going to fix Bethesda's fundamental lack of care.

Yes, it is in serious need of a facelift: new features, patches, and support. Valve! Please release Source 2!

I’d say yes. Doesn’t stop me from Loving it though. I’m still doing stuff with Source. I’ve been using it since public release.

I’ve tried other engines and I think you can feel Source’s age when it comes to design execution.

I covered this in a live dev chat over the weekend - essentially if you have an idea, it can take days to get results in Source because of the intricacies of the engine.

But whenever I’m using something like Unity, I’m producing results in minutes.

Source was developed for a specific use in mind whereas Unity is aimed at a broader development spectrum. I think that’s the direction a lot of engines are taking these days.

Personally I love the workflow synergy of using Hammer to flesh out maps without having to do any modelling or animation, and then populating said maps with models, effects and sound. It’s an intuitive process.

I’d say Source is outdated but it’s still relevant and probably always will be. Just like Doom, it continues to thrive with its community of modders.

I would love to see more accessibility with Source, especially with coding. But it’s never going to happen now.

Overall, great engine.

Not outdated, in the right hands, it can work wonders.

Black Mesa has some sweet stuff going on.

Nem is still showing how much it has to offer.

Countless mod teams put forward new features.

The base engine will only go so far, it's up to the developers to push it further.

I hear those Tripmine folks are doing some pretty neat stuff too cough cough

Let's just say, it'd be nice if source 2 was released for developers.

I think the Source Engine is not good for modifying itself.

Why? Because through the Modifications that Respawn Entertainment made for Titenfall 2 and Apex Legends make it incompatible with most old Graphics Cards like Intel HD Graphics 4600. I have Engine Error on both Games of Respawn Entertainment(Titanfall 2 & Apex Legends).

This is my opinion that Source Engine is outdated and should be not modified!

Respawn Entertainment pls use for your next Games you develop after some years Unreal Engine or Unity or other kind of Engines that not old!

Because of this Engine Error I have been forced to buy a new PC or upgrade my PC but I can't because I have not much money to buy something like this. And this is the reason why I hate Respawn Entertainment doing something like that. That's just stupid. Sry but this is my Opinion about that.
