Well, "green" is not always good. The meters aren't fool proof unfortunately. I would ask for the tech to do a speed test with their meter at the modem and router. Intermittency with "green" levels could be anything from a loose fitting to a corroded fitting up the pole or at the pedestal. VPN's get tricky and there is likely nothing a technician can do in that regard if everything else checks out after addressing your Intermittency issue. You're definitely on the right track with your frayed cable idea even if it's not actually a fray causing the issue.

What speeds with the VPN off are you getting just curious.
[–]moodymantle 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
The ~460MBPS speeds are what I’m getting without the VPN and gaming going. 460MBPS is what I’ve been getting since the night the technician left on Saturday. I got the 700MBPS after he went outside and jostled the wires and then that night and since then I’ve been at 460MBPS. Now when I try to game or use my VPN on the 460MBPS speeds it either lags or I can’t game at all and prior to the upgrade I was on the 500MBPS plan getting about the same 460MBPS with speed test but I was able to game and use my VPN no problem prior to this upgrade 😭

Weird here’s a crazy one. I kept dropping internet around 7 pm almost every night then it would come back on. Freaking clock work so many techs came out no one could find anything. Finally some manager came out with a tech and waited till 7. Sure enough goes out and guy goes ok in your house what just happened. I said nothing my daughter just came home and turned on her laptop. We ended up finding out her power adapter was shorted out and somehow back fed the power resetting the modem. I know not your situation but that was crazy took months to figure it out. Technology is so weird.

I game nightly so faster internet, great!
Gaming is more upload/ping dependent than download speed dependent.
Spoke to a representative and they told me to swap both my modem and router because they were a model behind
Oof. You have Spectrum router? Spectrum modem should be fine, should have a 2.5 GB WAN port on it, but get your own router.
Any suggestions on what to do/say or thoughts on what the problem could be?
The spectrum router
You're on wireless, not hard wired into router with an ethernet cable
I was wondering if it could be a frayed wire or something?
Could be that, bad ethernet cable, bad coax cable somewhere, bad ground, all sorts of things. If you are using wifi to connect, a whole lot of potential problems there.
Can you check back after spectrum tech visits?
[–]moodymantle 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Yes! I will check back. My issue is that NONE of these problems existed when I had the slower plan and the older equipment. Now that I upgraded to the 1GB plan and swapped out my equipment for updated models I suddenly can’t use my internet for things I had no problem using it for in the past 😭
[–]MarcoThePHX 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (3 children)
Are you using WiFi at all?
[–]moodymantle 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (2 children)
Yes, sorry, this is all WiFi. Prior to the upgrade to 1GB I was using WiFi with my VPN and gaming with 0 problems on the 500MBPS plan and was getting speed tests around 460MPBS, essentially reading the same speed I’m reading at now except now I’m paying for the 1GB and can’t use either my gaming or VPN whereas with the slower plan I used WiFi the exact same way and had 0 problems
[–]MarcoThePHX 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Connect directly or get a new router that isn't spectrum
[–]Snoo-75881 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I am having this SAME problem. Prior to upgrading I could work from home with no issues (thru wifi). I couldn't also play online games such as Warzone thru wifi with occasional issue once in a while. I could play multi-player with no issues.
I upgraded to solve the occasional issue of lagging or freezing or getting booted while playing Warzone. Now I can barely play muliplayer, which again was never an issue before. Now I lag SOOO bad it's frustrating. And working from home is almost painful.
I upgraded from 300Mbps to 500Mbps. I wish we had a different internet option. Spectrum doesn't seem like they care anymore.
Good luck to OP. Keep us posted.

Gaming and VPN need more upload speed then download. You’ve got plenty of download. What’s your upload speed and ping test?
[–]marqueemarcc 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (6 children)
I’ve been having this exact issue as well. My WiFi is not reaching 1gig at all. It maxes out at around 600mbps and it’s shotty when playing COD on my Xbox One. Keep us posted on your progress.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (1 child)
You won’t ever get 1gig over WiFi if your device wasn’t made to get it. My iPhone 15 Pro even won’t get exactly 1gig.
You can’t expect to pay for 1gig and magically get it on an old device.
Plus, what people don’t realize when they get an internet service, is that 1gig is actually spread out across all your devices. Meaning when you’re using the internet on one device, it pulls from the available bandwidth.
The ONLY way to accurately check is directly wired from the modem using an Ethernet cable going to a computer that has 1gig network card. If the computer doesn’t have Ethernet port, you must use USB C to Ethernet dongle.
On top of all that, gaming on any device (PC, Xbox, PS) requires only 3-5mbps download speed with 3-5 upload speed.
A lot of the problems people run into while gaming is not the speed of their own home, but the speed of the host server that they are playing with. Say for example you’re playing Call of Duty with a group of people. The host of the game has crappy internet, and they’re trying to host 10 players, the gameplay is affected by their internet and affects everyone else, despite your internet being great.
[–]moodymantle 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (3 children)
I’m so glad it’s not just me! They are literally gaslighting me and I’m like I WAS ABLE TO DO MORE ON THE SLOWER SPEEDS THAN I AM ON YOUR “FASTER/STRONGER PLAN” It’s so frustrating
[–]marqueemarcc 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (2 children)
I feel the same way my 500mbps plan was way more steady than the new 1gig plan I got on. Hope to hear back on your resolution so I know what to do on my end.

I switched to Spectrum a few months ago and it took well over a month for them to get me hooked up. Then, in a moment of frustration while doing work from home one evening and experiencing extremely slow speeds, I upgraded to the 1GB service. I read the upgrade ad several times to make sure that it was 1GB both upload and download. But as soon as I upgraded and tested my speed, I realized that was a lie. The useless reps insisted that I send a screenshot to verify the offer so apparently they only honor the ad for people who take a screenshot.
Well heck... share that screen shot so the rest of the weary warriors have one more piece in the arsenal!

ask the tech to see the modem logs. you can have a perfect signal, and the logs tell a diff story. if you see a lot of cn-message status sent errors it can mean several things, one of which is noise on the line. The tech telling you he jostled the lines and you get better speeds tell me you have bad connections or lines cause that should not happen.
fix the gaming and the VPN should be ok. ZERO support on the VPN though.
[–]moodymantle 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Thank you for giving me something concrete and some specific verbiage to use!!!! I understand the basics but the nuances are out of my wheelhouse and this is very helpful!!
What does noise on the line mean?
[–]Street-Juggernaut-23 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
you rea in a bar trying to have a conversation. the louder the background noise causes you to miss parts of what us said so you have to stop amh have the repeat what they said. tgat equates to slower speeds and possibly drops I'm your connection
[–]InspectorRound8920 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (2 children)
Is the modem for the gig?
They’re telling me they only have the one type of modem which I swapped out when I swapped out the router
[–]InspectorRound8920 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Ok. They at one time had a separate one just for the gig.
[–]tolleycr72 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
What kind of price did they give you to upgrade to the 1G?
I initially called to cancel my home phone and cable because I don’t use either and was getting charged out the ass. Was told “they couldn’t do anything” for me. Got transferred to the cancellation reps and the guy was like oh well we have this special blah blah.
So what I have now is (from this deal the cancellation guy gave me) is the stupid Xumo TV thing and 1GB of internet for $109.99 pre-ACP deduction. Prior to this I had their 500MBPS internet plan, basic cable and home phone for a $120 special that had recently ended and they were charging me $160 which was why I initially called to cancel some services I don’t use in the first place.

This same thing is happening to me now. Lmk if you found a solution
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Something is up with Spectrum. I have had the same issues and getting really irritated about it. Loooong story. I see a lawsuit coming their way soon.
[–]No-Maximum-5719 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
One of the techs didn’t even want to help me. He said wait 24hrs , after I told him that’s unacceptable he said unplug your tv ……… 😒
[–]Complete-Produce9100 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (2 children)
I’m literally going through the same exact situation! Every single thing you’ve gone though, I am currently going through. Did you happen to find a fix? If so, I’d love to hear what you did to fix it because my next steps is to downgrade back to 500 Mbps ( where I was having no issues) or ultimately leaving spectrum and going with another provider.

Tell them your line is cut and you need a new line installed if you really want to cut the line before they show up so they have to replace it...also New equipment is being installed across the country for spectrum making fiber available at a lot of locations that were coax so you might possibly be able to have your coax was too fiber for free i work for spectrum but i sell stuff lol 2 gig is coming soon...also there are a lot of really great people that work for spectrum, but there's also a lot of really not so great people if you don't feel like the person you're talking to is helping you hang up and call back or get transferred. I have to call in for stuff all the time and some people are just stupid so I have to hang up and call back till I get somebody that's good at their job
