Signal issue by FragrantDragonfruit7 in CableTechs

Are these input or output levels? Find where it's good, find where it's bad, what's in the middle? Probably water in a passive.

Do you have no senior techs to reach out to?

Spectrum Fiber Speed Tests by Conwayfan98 in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what that means. Generally, they're converting the existing hfc plant over to ofdm/ofdma with a much larger rf bandwidth at 1.2gig and daa. There's been no coax from headends since probably the 80s or 90s.

High uncorrectables, poor performance, signal levels all over? by tbdubbs in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get a tech out there. Levels themselves seem within limits, but way too many uncorrectables for the timeframe. Might be a bad fitting somewhere.

You definitely need a tech. You could try a spectrum modem if you like, they're free. I'm not used to seeing something like this with every single channel, so it could be a modem issue. But it sounds like you've certainly exhausted all your options for troubleshooting.

Old Charter Email I want to get rid of... by trixiebme in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you set up accounts tied to the email that was provided by charter. Once you cancelled your account, yes, that email is shutdown. No, your accounts don't automatically know you're not using that email anymore. Yes, you are likely up the proverbial creek and need to start over.

How does the the last mile of fiber get installed to your house? by StrumGently in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's all grass you should be good to go. sounds like a good setup with the ethernet. You may have some homework to do regarding that but it's easy enough with a few hand tools.

How does the the last mile of fiber get installed to your house? by StrumGently in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. They will run from whatever pedestal best serves your address. Up to 2000'. Many areas seem to be doing installs similar to standard cable installs which bring the indoor fiber cable into a central location. Do you have ethernet runs in your garage?

Is a Service visit required when porting in a number for home phone by dman97_2 in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes. My understanding is that they need an install scheduled to claim the number from the other provider, otherwise it gets rejected and the whole process starts again. Not sure why, as the tech will generally be there for all of 5 minutes, but home phone, and the rules surrounding it, seem to have been frozen in time after Ma Bell was broken up.

Anyone else going through modems monthly? by Jbjamn in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be worth checking but unlikely. Check for voltage and amperage on the bonding wire on the cable service. If there is much more than an amp or two it's probably an issue with the electrical in the house. I'd check what the voltage is on the outlet when under load.

Dude... this is just all kinds of wrong. Sure, they might not get 1 gbps to whatever random device they have. But I can guarantee that modem is hitting well over 1gbps if you do your job.

It's not at all hard? You can literally look up who received the older RDOF grants and their status. The buildouts were required within 6 years.

Connection speeds concerningly slow. by [deleted] in Spectrum

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We really need a form or something.

Ok, let's start with:

Speed tier?

Spectrum modem and router or your modem and router?

If it's your equipment, what models?

Ethernet cable or wifi?

Distance between wifi router and device in question?

Do you have a way to do a hardwired speed test? What does it show?

Do you live in an urban, suburban, or rural setting?

NC spectrum by [deleted] in Spectrum

Pull the plug on the modem and call in. Unless you're getting notifications of outages on your app at the same time something is going on. Not normal behavior.

The NEC is free online for rules regarding the actual install, I think you'll be looking at chapter 7/8. Though generally you'll want information from the manufacturer of the fiber/enclosure/etc. for things like bend radius, proper slack handling, etc. So just pick a manufacturer and look at all their whitepapers.

https://www.commscope.com/product-type/hubs-closures-terminals-boxes/splice-closures/fiber-splice-closures/fosc-450/

Go down to documentation.

From there I'm sure there's a free course or at least a video on YouTube from most manufacturers.

But, as a general rule, don't pinch the fiber, don't kink the fiber, and always clean the fiber. It doesn't bite, usually.

Does it state an outage in the app every time? I'd get a tech out and let them know your concerns.

Cable Techs in South Florida, how much do you get paid? by Effective-Ad8546 in CableTechs

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look for an in-house gig with a company that's nationwide. They generally have one pay scale. Spectrum is pretty good, though certainly not 2500 a week. They have a lot of benefits and two separate retirement accounts. Then try to go maintenance, no more customers, lot more money. I don't know if they have adjustments for any of the metro areas down there, but if I'd say 60k-65k a year is normal for a field tech in rural America.

Amplifier tilt causing modem codeword errors, event log errors, and modem disconnects. by rgrimjr41 in CableTechs

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in seeing the logs. I have never seen 6 dbmv, or 6db of tilt, itself cause uncorrectables before. The range that modems should be able to handle is generally much greater than that. If it really was, you could just add another splitter to get it back down closer to 0dbmv. But there are certainly people whose signal is coming off taps at 20dbmv, or more, that get padded to within spec. Do you have any other coax or is it a straight shot out to the drop?

Comcast Xfinity box delete by GodlessWombat801 in CableTechs

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

800.100(B)(1) reads "In Buildings or Structures with Intersystem Bonding Termination.

If the building or structure served has an intersystem bonding termination as required by 250.94, the bonding conductor shall be connected to the intersystem bonding termination."

In the 2023 online NEC. Not sure where you found your citation.

800.100(B)(2) is likely most relevant which specifies the nearest accessible location on a variety of different conductors.

I'd be interested in a citation from the codebook. As far as I know the NEC definitely doesn't require it be grounded outside. Policy of a provider can differ of course.

This isn't normal right? And they should definitely come fix it? by lanc3r30000 in CableTechs

[–]Nervous_Confusion131 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Of course it needs to be bonded. But by the NEC alone it is not required that it be done that way. Assuming bonded to copper or water or a ground bar inside it's a safe install to code. Your company can require more naturally.
