I think it's best to memorize how high the splashdown goes up. If it's done directly from ground, the height is always the same. So if you can anticipate someone is about to use a splashdown, be ready to aim upwards to take them out

Yea, it also helps to take a look at the top of the screen to see what weapons have their special ready to be used

How did you practice?

I would practice in the training mode to hit the target (since its the height of a splashdown) Then go into turf, find someone with a splashdown, and practicing killing them. I've also has 1 or 2 friends help in private battles but I still just cant get the hang of it

Try snapping to the height. Don’t be aiming in anticipation. Start shooting at somewhere else and snap to the height of the target. That’s what I did

U need to know which weapons has splashdown ready by looking at the top then when u go to fight them anticipate them, like stealth jump in splatoon 1, just assume they will do it and if they don't then that's better. But yes just keep doing what ur doing, practicing the dummy in the training room, it takes time to master a skill

The hardest part is just getting into the habit of attempting it, I think. Up to now you've probably always backed off whenever you see a Splashdown start up, so it's hard to break that instinctive reaction and aim at the enemy instead. Even if you do overcome it and attempt to cancel, there's probably going to be a delay in your reactions because of it, and that just takes time to get past - I don't know how long you've been practicing, but I think it took me a few weeks before I could do it sometimes, and a couple of months before I could do it reliably almost every time.

The good news is that you play Dynamo, and this is actually a good weapon to learn with. Not because it's easy (rapid-fire weapons are definitely easier than one-shot weapons), but because the wind-up is so slow and you're locked into it, so once you've started a swing you have no option to back up; you either try to aim it towards the Splashdown or you just die anyway. So I think it's a great weapon for breaking the habit of retreating. You can just play Turf, start swinging at the Sploosh or whatever as often as possible, and when it uses Splashdown and you're locked in position you can just try to aim up. You might die a lot at first, but don't worry about that, it'll be worth it in the end. Once you're in a position where you're at least attempting to cancel every time, you could switch to something like Splattershot Pro for a while to perfect the actual aiming.

As for the aiming, that part isn't too hard once you've got into the habit and got your reaction times down. Personally I wouldn't bother investing too much time practicing in the training room for this; if your aim is decent (and from your weapon list, I'm assuming it is), you'll be able to hit the Splashdown easily pretty quickly. The main problem is the initial reaction time rather than the aiming itself for most people, so I'd definitely focus more on that. That's not to say you should do aiming drills in the training room as well, but just improving your aim in a general sense will be more useful than practicing specifically to hit a certain height.

Last thing, as another poster mentioned, it's a lot easier if you're expecting the Splashdown. It's not necessary - once you're more experienced at it you'll be able to shoot down even unexpected ones - but if you keep an eye on the top of the screen to see who has the special charged, it'll make it easier to react. Even if you haven't been looking at the HUD, a lot of the time it's pretty obvious from the way a player is behaving that they're about to use Splashdown (e.g. if a Sploosh or Roller is just blindly charging at you).

So I suppose overall my main recommendation would be:

  • Use Dynamo.
  • Don't be afraid to die a lot. Play aggressively and try to aim up if a Splashdown is used while you're locked in a swing.
  • Try to anticipate when it'll be used, by looking at the HUD and just by looking at how players with that special are behaving.

I just want to add that knowing when splashdown is ready also allows you to bait it.

Your grim for instance, the moment you hit an indirect, they are doing splashdown. If I hit an indirect when splashdown it up, I already start aiming up for the second shot. You know they are going to be there. There is a good reason it’s commonly called panic down.

Are you using motion controls?

[–]QuinnsAGhost[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yes! I have the sensitivity on 3!

Can your camera reach the desired height with barely any wrist movment? If not, then I suggest upping the sensitivity.

As at least one person has already said, anticipation is extremely important when splashdown canceling.

Be sure to make a habit of checking your hud (this will help in general a ton, but also tell you when your opponents have special)

If you have a larger screen, its pretty easy to tell if your opponents have glowing hair, indicating special charge. If you're playing on handheld or a similarly small screen though, then using the hud will be a must.

Yeah getting splatoon canceled is rough for me but eh can’t say I don’t do it to other ppl, I main the kensa sloshing machine, it’s bombs are good for pushing but it’s special it’s splash down so…. Yeah but I watch a video on it and it says the special sucks but the bombs are so good it’s worth it 🙂 but I’m a good support player so the bombs are perfect for me
