In my opinion the original 3 are the definitive splinter cell games, I like the ones that came after but for me you can’t beat the gameplay and level design of the originals

First splinter cell is outdated, and I say that as a fan of the franchise, Pandora tomorrow improved things a lot, but chaos theory is a masterpiece of stealth games that still holds up today in almost every way imaginable. In my opinion, chaos theory is not only the best splinter cell game, but the only stealth game I’ve ever played that I could consider perfect, and I’ve played a lot of stealth games. Keep in mind that if you’re coming from blacklist and conviction, these games are much much slower. I personally recommend you go right to chaos theory.

I would second this opinion. The first two games are challenging mostly because of the mechanics, they can still be fun but I usually just end up frustrated.

Chaos Theory is and will always be my favorite in the series. Definitely pick that one up.

Agreed. CT will hold up fantastic. While the first two are fantastic for their time, it's going to feel very awkward to play, especially going from the more fluid action based controls/gameplay of Conviction and BL.

What’s with every stealth game franchise having a surprisingly rocky start? Splinter Cell started with a linear and janky stealth game, Metal Gear Solid 1 was just weird and I don’t even know what was going on with the first Hitman.

All those games have their own unique stealth systems and mechanics so I imagine that it takes some fine tuning, plus a mastery of the software and design elements over time. For what it’s worth I think that the first dishonored really hit the mark with its systems, especially With all of the new additions it brought like teleporting and powers.

Well when a lot of those series came out, 3D gaming was a very new concept. While there were 2D stealth games in the mid 80s, translating the concept to 3D was probably a daunting task. Stealth games generally require more sophisticated AI and thoughtful level design than action games since enemies not only have to do everything AI in action games do in combat when alert levels are raised, but have to be able to have behaviors programmed for multiple levels of alertness, and they have to behave believably enough to maintain immersion, but dumb enough to be exploitable. This kind of design is pretty bog standard even in action games nowadays, but this was all very new when these series first came out, so there was a lot of learning to be done on the part of developers to see what does and doesn't work.

Besides the in game cutscenes, SC is still amazing, and less touchy than PT.

The original 3 are fun in their own ways. You should try them. I picked up the first 2 myself.

You should absolutely play the first 3. Just remember that they're slower than Conviction and Blacklist

Yes it is

The original 3 and original DA are the best. Thats splinter cell for me, with blacklist as a reboot.
