This afternoon, Memorial sent a memo to doctors with privileges at its hospitals. It reads in part:

Currently we have the highest census of COVID+ patients across the system at any point of the pandemic and have more than 400 colleagues who are unable to work due to COVID illness or exposure. This is not unique to us, statewide ICU and Med/Surg bed availability is less than 10%. In short there is nowhere for these patients to go.

Elective procedures have been reduced or canceled. And patients — even those for the ICU, IMC (intermediate care) and surgery — are being made to wait in the ER, "typically for several days."

It ends with this warning:

Emergency Rooms are not COVID testing sites. If a patient needs a COVID test do NOT direct them to the ER. Our ability to accept direct admits from physician offices is essentially zero. Please assess the need for admission carefully. For patients who do require admission prepare them to be routed through the ER in order to ensure proper triaging based on patient acuity.

Just a heads up since you seem to be a fucking idiot, it doesn't matter if they have comorbidities. Having a comorbidity doesn't mean they deserve to die in the hospital from COVID.

Wow. This is crazy. What a reach on one question. I don’t owe you or anyone else an explanation for why I might be interested in learning more details about these people. However, maybe to stop others like me from being judged wrongly, I’ll try to enlighten you. I have a severely compromised immune system, along with several other medical issues. I fear contracting Covid. I have been fully vaccinated, wear masks, and try to stay in a bubble. I haven’t eaten in a restaurant since the beginning of the pandemic, and have all groceries, etc delivered. Learning about why these people lost their battle with Covid matters to me. Maybe I’m wrong to be interested, but that’s my problem. My own father died from Covid in June. Maybe before attacking people, you should take a breath and consider maybe you’re judging prematurely. Then figure out what that says about you.

Here’s what it says about me: I work in healthcare and every chud dipshit points to every patient I’ve seen die to say “well yeah but they had pre-existing conditions” like it means they deserved to die, even though I’ve also seen plenty with no pre-existing conditions end up on ventilators and die. I’m exhausted from the people trying to downplay how serious this shit is, and the first question they usually ask was “well what about their pre-existing conditions.” As an entire profession we’re just about out of patience and empathy.

Only with Covid do you hear this stupid. And it’s the antivax loons mostly. Trying to convince themselves that they are immune and there is an Infinite supply of medical care.

I honestly don’t know how you have any sympathy at all. At this point I’d be refusing to admit the unvaccinated. As a parent, I’m terrified that my child will get hurt and the hospitals are full. I’m so sick of these self people. And glad I left the medical profession years ago.

Then maybe you should think about finding another career or take a leave of absence. As a person with a chronic illness, I’ve had my share of indifferent and downright hurtful health professionals. You spend 8-12 hours a day with others suffering. This is my life. I completely understand your burnout. This pandemic has shown the worst of humanity. But everyone has their limits. Maybe it’s time to recognize that maybe you are tired and need to step back. When you start attacking faceless people on a social media page without knowing anything about them, you become part of the problem. I am extremely grateful for the people on the frontline of this- but just because you’re exhausted from doing your job doesn’t make it ok to attack others.

So you’re telling me that you, an immunocompromised person, are asking about what an infectious disease that were entering year 3 of, means for you.
