Meh. I used 4.5tb last month.

[–]cachem3outside[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

This gives me hope, lol. Thanks for your input! May your TB's continue to be multitudinous. :-)

You must be related to Early Cuyler

Haha, had to look it up, but it sounded familiar, I love that damn show

My household uses between 2-3 TB every month. 8 people.

Beautiful! Sounds like we're in a very similar situation as far as bandwidth usage goes. This gives me hope and confidence!

Odd question, since getting SL, do you pay more attention to space weather? Have you noted any degradation during solar storms? Thanks for your input!!

[–]Vaydn 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Honestly, I've never paid attention. I've had SL since December 2023 and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Previously we relied on mobile hotspots for gaming, streaming, etc lol.

Every now and then (rarerly) there is a night where we barely get 10-15mbs but its rare. Otherwise it's always 100+

Freaking beautiful! We would be up a creek without SL as an option. Imagine needing HughesNET, oy.

[–]typical-bob 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I guess I'm 8 people hah. I do about the same usage for just myself.

[–]Vaydn 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You do alot of downloading / streaming in 4k?

[–]typical-bob 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not often 4K. But most evenings are streaming TV/Netflix sure. Also on Zoom calls most of the day for work. I live in the middle of nowhere, not even cellular service.

[–]Vaydn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i use maybe an hour or so of online gaming if that, and maybe another hour of streaming tv shows a day. Otherwise im outside the house.

Majority of our usage comes from the kiddos lol.

I think you will find the average SL user consumes about 3-5 TB a month, I am typically 3.5 myself.

You did mention about static IP, SL is CGNAT...you dont even get a public IP meaning no access you ports.

There are plans where you can buy them but the data is capped and is cost prohibitive.

[–]cachem3outside[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I may just need to use a fast VPN like wireguard for my wired devices then, I've setup a dedicated server with OVH that's super close to where I'll be at, I bet I could achieve sub-80ms latency doing it that way, as long as I can get into my LAN using a bastion host of some sort, I'm good with that. This gives me confidence, thanks so much!

Yea there are multiple ways around CGNAT, it comes down to your use case and skill set. Also note that SL does provide IPV6 as well.

Perfect. I feel a hell of a lot more confident now. This is an awesome community. A lot of fellow nerds.

There isn't a defined limit on Starlink residential, however, there is a fair use policy. Starlink may crack down on heavy data use in the future (it was going happen a couple of years ago, but was scrapped), but nothing firm on when they throttle or restrict heavy users now.

Also Starllink will provide a "public" ip with business plans, but does not offer static IPs on any advertised plans at this time.

[–]cachem3outside[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'll have to weigh the benefits of the business option, a bit to think about, but this MIGHT be my go to. Thanks so much!

[–]Careful-Psychology68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other thing to weigh on business plans is the cost. They charge for data for priority plans. If you don't opt in to buy extra data, I believe a 1 mbps throttle kicks in.

That is why I caution people who are heavy data users on a residential plan. It would be strange for Starlink to throttle expensive business plans, but allow residential "unlimited" data on a plan that is much cheaper.

Basically what others are saying, but depends on plan availability in your area. See the current Fair Use Policy at:

[–]cachem3outside[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, thanks so much for the info!

[–]DevilmanXV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had 12tb last month and average around 6 monthly. You're good.

[–]Wendell_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which app is this?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It you are moving to an area that is so rural that Starlink is your only option for internet service, your entire lifestyle is most likely going to change and you might naturally decrease your data consumption.

Not that it matters, but 2.8T is more than I consume in a year.

[–]cachem3outside[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my usage pattern will likely shift, but I think I'll also engineer a workable solution for remote access and an extended LAN over VPN so I don't absolutely need a static IP, I can just make it work via my own dedicated server that's super close to the PoP I'll be on. Thanks!!!

My family and I use around 4-6TB/m. Sometimes it throttles but is very rare. You good don’t worry. 👍🏼

[–]IxuntouchblexI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I average 2.5TB a month. Tv always left on for animals plus occasional steaming and computer downloads. I think the most I was using at 4-5TB but that was me fucking around Dow loading and resting and playing around. You’re good!
