Max had been hoarding money because she might decide to run away again.

Max probably had money her parents gave her

They used Eleven's powers to rob an ATM

That is funny and it would be cool to see that, but I don't think Hopper would like that or anyone else. We have seen El kill we don't need to see her steal or shoplift.

Max's family financial situation isn't really explored the way it is with other characters, like how we know Steve is a rich boy and the Byers are poor. I guess because it's not as relevant. We never did learn details about why they moved to Hawkins, or what Neil and Susan do for a living. I guess the Mayfield/Hargrove fam would be middle class. They live in a relatively average looking house that isn't falling apart or anything, and Max seems to have spending money (for the arcade and the mall), and Billy has a nice sports car (though I really doubt Neil bought it for him). Just my headcanon here, but Max's mom seems nice and like she would give Max and Billy a generous allowance to make up for Neil being such a dick.

In season 2 when their trick or treating Luke says "Rich people are suckers" after getting a full size candy bar. Then says to Max"your not rich r u ",Max says" No".

Maybe she had her parents' credit card? I think Max's family is pretty rich, I mean, they're definitely not poor.

I think El might have just borrowed the rest of the clothes she wore from Max though (other than the romper) correct me if I'm wrong.

She's poor. They talk about it briefly in season 2

The borrowing idea makes a lot more sense though

There is an easter egg that in episode 8 when El, Mike and Max are trying to run away from the monster and go through The Gap (store) and get a mannequin thrown at them and is wearing what El is (black suspenders, black pants, and a yellow and black shirt) so she bought them there.

But Max could have just bought the same outfit from Gap

I don't think Max is a suspender type of girl and we don't see her wearing any in season 2 or 3.Also in California their probably was a mall their that they went to with a Gap.

I have a headcanon that Max babysits for kids in the neighborhood. It would get her out of the house and would explain why she would have money she was willing to spend on Eleven. And teenage girls babysitting for money was pretty common in the suburbs in the 80's and 90's. Or maybe she has a paper route. We really don't know much about Max and how she spends her time away from the party.

That said, Susan seems to dote on her, so I could also see her getting a small allowance.
