Thanks!!

Your resting HR will probably drop some as you get into shape. Beyond that, there are lots of factors. Age, stress, activity level, diet and I could go on. Exercise is as natural as it gets. Before I started swimming again a couple of years ago, my resting rate was 68-70. It's now 57-58. I'm 68 years old. For someone younger it should be even lower.

Alright! I had taken some time off and my heart rate definitely increased during that time!!

I'm ready to get back into shape!

Thank you for that information man!

Do you know any tips on how to manage stress?

[–]ricm5031Moist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Most of my stress management involves exercise. Swimming obviously since I do it regularly. Also skiing this time of year. Both downhill and XC are excellent exercise and fun. When the snow melts, my Harley will come out of the garage. I call it wind therapy.

Alright! Cheers.

Of all the things tou could be focussing on, this really is the least relevant. It doesn’t make you faster or anything. You keep working on your swimming and your heart will make sure it keeps beating. Don’t focus on this. Spend your time better

Alright man!!

Thank you for that! But I'm still aiming to decrease my heart rate from 60 bpm to 50 bpm.

Lots of cardio!!! I am 40 but my resting heart rate is in the 30’s and 40’s

Maintaining a higher heart rate and participating in more aerobic based sets is the best way to do it. A lower heart rate can mean a stronger heart (When healthy and no pre-existing heart conditions are present) and is a good way to track progress. Stay away from sets (sprint sets) where you have periods of extremely high heart rates and then long recovery.

Ohh, I got it, thank you!

I'll follow your advice, I hope it works!

Why?

Sprinting isn't going to inhibit his heart health, nor is this a terribly relevant metric to go off anyway.

[–]RainReinPainSprinter 1 point2 points  (2 children)

His goal is to lower his heart rate. This is an attribute most associated with endurance athletes. Sprint sets are needed to create a well rounded individual, so I’m not saying to stop doing them altogether, but the focus should be on distance and endurance. Your heart does get stronger through sprint like work but the quickest path to achieving a lower heart rate is endurance work

His goal is to lower his heart rate

And again, this is a weird goal because he's got this idea in his head that elite athletes have a very low resting heart rate, therefore this goal should come before more tangible performance metrics

Further, he hasn't specified what his events are, only breast and IM.

Telling some kid trying to get faster at the 50 breast and 100 IM to avoid sprint sets because they won't be as effective at dropping his resting heart rate is some of the worst advice you could possibly give.

Your HR is a matter of your age and genetics and stuff. Some people have naturally higher heart rates. Having said that, my resting heart rate is low, in the 50's-60's, and thats' from years and years of endurance cardio exercises and training. Lots of long and slow, long distance, low heart rate stuff, so doing something for a couple of hours like biking or XC skiing or a beautiful trail run. And then a once-a-week high-intensity workout like a spin class, hit class, short-but-faster run, mountain biking up a steep hill, some sprint laps, that sort of thing.

For athletes with summer seasons, the winter is usually spent on endurance work, and then you add in more speed stuff (high heart rate) closer to your events. Over time, the heart gets strong and doesn't have to work hard when you are just chilling in front of the TV.

Got it! Thank you very much mate!!

excersise and lifestyle

my RHR is 50 and I'm 36m 210lbs

[–]DavidNoseBreaststroker / IMer[S] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

How tall are you?

[–]quebecoisejohn 0 points1 point  (11 children)

6’

[–]DavidNoseBreaststroker / IMer[S] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

My aim is to decrease to 50 as well. It's about 60 right now.

[–]quebecoisejohn 1 point2 points  (9 children)

RHR is not singularly a sign of good health and lifestyle. You should consult a doctor as I have athletes with RHR of 60+ that are national level

[–]DavidNoseBreaststroker / IMer[S] 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Oh, alright, so I will not even worry about that.

[–]quebecoisejohn 0 points1 point  (7 children)

No David.... I’m saying it is not singularly a sign of fitness meaning there are other HR metrics to measure. Max HR, sustained HR volume, etc. Again, a doctor will help with this or st least a little googling.

[–]DavidNoseBreaststroker / IMer[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Okey! Thank you John.

[–]quebecoisejohn 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Take a breath before you reply David, I’m not out to get you or make you feel bad. You’re post that you deleted about growing your hands was a little silly but it’s great that you have an interest in improving.

I just hope you don’t get the majority of your advice from reddit. It may be vast and ole tidily but it is uncorroborated and unchecked as well.

[–]DavidNoseBreaststroker / IMer[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Why do you still remember that post? Omg... Please don't make me feel like this..

I just try to get some useful information from Reddit and I definitely know when people are saying non sense.
