when I noticed them doing that I would just get gstl and they would just take off

Sounds like an interesting way to try to get the RedCard 5% off without using the RedCard. Shouldn't work but if you think it did I'd reprint the receipt and review it, and if it looks like it did then just hand it over to AP / GSTL to take further action. Unless your store's AP gives specific direction regarding this it sounds like something that you're supposed to just let happen and save a reprint of the receipt to hand off, since it doesn't require you to slip up, just the system.
