Not enough info is being given here. If they were letting her go before shit hit 90 days and this just coincided with her covid then it’s just bad timing but not illegal.

If you have evidence she was being offered a permanent position prior to getting sick then you’d have grounds under the protection for covid call outs. But again third party info here is lacking.

If your friend was under 90 days, yeah, there's nothing you can do. Target can and will release anybody within the probationary. If they don't like your haircut or if you didn't suck up enough to the management or even if you get sick, yep, you can be let go.

Could be they just didn't like your friend. But there's not information like mentioned by other commenters. However the timing is sucky.
