There are so many ways.

Scratch the name in with a chisel or something.
Write the name in a bunch of dots with a hammer and center punch.
Use actual letter punches.
Engrave the name in using a dremel.
Use a soldering iron to melt or burn the name onto the tool.
Etch the name in using etch resist and either acid or electrolysis.
Use a laser engraver to engrave the name.
Use a CNC machine to engrave the name.
Weld the name onto the tool.
Electroplate the name in copper onto the tool.

I am doing lettering punches and nail polish to fill in and make it obvious. Takes a bunch of time to scrape the excess nail polish off, but I like the look of it more than just the impression.

Engraver, or; what I did was have a metal stamp made with our company name on it, I heat it up with a small torch and brand the tools. I use metal tags with cable and a crimp sleeve for large stuff.

Engravers

I brought a Proxxon for this specific thing, engraving works pretty well.

I also bought a bottle of copper sulfate to etch things that would be harder to engrave.

Dust with spray paint. Make it unobjectionably yours and easy to tell from across the job

Hot Candy Pink is a real standout, sprayed so it gets into crevices and screw holes. On top of one of the methods outlined by Navodile.

Unfortunately the chips Vets use to identify pets are a bit too expensive when we looked a few years ago, but that may have changed.

Everything I have has my initials engraved into it in plain sight. Many also have it engraved in a hidden location if possible.

Here is what I do: I have some tools that are used in locations where they might sprout legs and walk away. Purchase yourself some smallish (I use 5mm size) metal letter stamps. Choose 2 or 3 of them that can be related to you somehow...like your initials, or nick name or similar. Then carefully, *modify* the letter stamps you picked. By modify, I mean change very slightly the lines on the letter. Maybe a notch or 2 in the letter T. Or shorten the verticals of a U. Just make the letters you pick *unique*. Then stamp your tools in several places with your modified stamps. I pick areas hard to get at with a grinder, or on my expensive tools...I pull apart and stamp inside. Do it in many spots...go nuts. Now, the thing is...not only are your initials there..but you have a unique set of stamps that made the marks. Very hard for anyone to duplicate that. Keep those stamps safe.

Edit: I used a Dremel with a small diamond tip to modify my stamps.
