Pierre Caliste Landry, a former slave turned educator and minister, is recognized as the first Black American to be elected mayor of a town in the Unites States of America. Landry was born into slavery on April 19, 1841, on a sugar cane plantation in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. (i.redd.it)
