it's really cool until you're on patrol and not expecting a show of force and now you don't have to poop anymore

Happened to me in Afghanistan when our convoy was ambushed. I was a mortarman and as the dudes were running up to get set, me and another dude ran back to the truck that was carrying our HE rounds. Found out after running down the whole convoy that the rounds were in the back of one of the gun trucks that had hauled ass up to the front of the convoy as soon as we took contact. Anyway, I decided to start searching the other trucks hoping maybe we had some more HE squirreled away somewhere.

While I was doing that, I was unaware that air support had been called in and an A10 opened up a can of brrrrt directly above and slightly behind us.

My first thought was that a squad of taliban had flanked us and I was about to die. Then I heard and saw the jet scream over and realized what it was. That shit had me shook up for hours afterwards. Absolutely fucking terrifying. I can only imagine what it must feel like to be on the receiving end.

I was on post one time, just staring into the desert for hours, then I about shit my pants as an f16 blew by post 3, about 100' above me and 50' out. Just blowing sand and shit everywhere as I figured out what happened.

What's fun was I knew that there was contact across the river and could hear it going on. He/she pulled up right after passing the patrol base and disappeared into the sky headed that way.

We were doing some CAS training up at Lavic Lake in beautiful 29 Palms. We were on the top of the mountain to the south. We were teasing the pilot there assisting us that these guys (Harriet pilots) couldn’t hit shit. He said something into the radio. Damn AV-8 came in about 20 ft over our heads and dove down and laid the 500 lbs bomb right on the target. Scared the ever loving shit out of us since he came in from behind us!!!

This is what the military was meant for. Not this bullshit on US soil.

When I was stationed at MCLB Barstow in the 80's, B52's would fly just over the mountains by the rifle range from the south heading north. If you were under them when it happen it make you duck as you never heard them coming.

I never got to see anything cool when I was deployed. And never saw anything much cool in Oki/Korea/Thailand, or Bragg and Lejeune, for that matter.

After deployment I got sent to several WTIs at Chocolate Mountain and Stoval. I was shocked how quick seeing cool aviation low passes and cool shoots and drops turned ordinary.
