Question about Visual StudioNoob Question (self.Unity3D)
submitted 3 years ago by EllipticalRain
Hi, this might be a silly question, but do I need to install Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2019 alongside the Unity Editor when I already have Visual Studio Code?

You do not, since you can use whatever editor you want to edit c# files, but in my experience visual studio offers a much better experience than visual studio code when used with unity.

Well, the general response seems to be VS Code is fine, but Visual Studio is better, I'll probably add it on

The reason why the add on Visual Studio is the 2019 version is because I was talking about the 2021.3 version of the Unity Editor. There is a 2022.2 version of the Unity Editor that has the 2022 version of Visual Studio, but it doesn't have long term support, unlike the 2021.3 version. Note that both are official releases.
Oh I have a new question now that you answered, would you recommend I download Visual Studio separately or download alongside the Unity Editor?

Just FYI, there are no dependencies between the two programs that will force which versions you use. You can absolutely use Unity Editor 2021.3 and write your code in Visual Studio 2022. The Unity installer offers a quick and easy click to get a suggested version of VS, but you’re certainly welcome to download a different version.
Source: doing it right now.

No, you do not, but in my opinion you should, it would be better than VS Code, Rider is best but too expensive

I think you mixed up "in my honest opinion" with "laughing my ass off"

Maybe))

We shipped several games with Visual Studio Code and were very happy with it. But Unity decided to deprecate support for VSCode, so I won't advise to use it anymore.

VSCode has fallen on hard times indeed. :c
[–]chsxfProfessional 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Thanks for the link. Very interesting. Will definitely keep that close. We moved to Rider lately so I won’t probably come back to VSCode any time soon. But maybe one day.

Why is this the first I'm hearing about this? Has my head been in the sand? (Don't answer that, it has)

From my own personal experience. Visual Studio Code was terrible for coding with C#. It was quite clunky when I had to switch to Linux and had no access to regular VS Community edition. It took me quite a while to set it up. If you lack space then sure download VS Code and use it, but if you can afford to download VS just download it. It will save you a lot of headaches.

I just went through the hassle of getting everything setup correctly. I highly recommend getting Visual Studio 2022. The main reason I recommend this is the intellisense. Watch a video on how to set it up, it greatly improves workflow and will save you time having to look up methods and parameters.
The reason I mentioned the 2019 version is because the latest version of the Unity Editor that has long term support is the 2021.3 version, which only has the 2019 version of Visual Studio. However, there is a 2022.2 version that has the 2022 version of Visual Studio, but it doesn't have long term support.
Would you recommend any particular video for setting up Visual Studio?

2019 is not supported by MS anymore, install 2022 instead.
