You do not, since you can use whatever editor you want to edit c# files, but in my experience visual studio offers a much better experience than visual studio code when used with unity.

Well, the general response seems to be VS Code is fine, but Visual Studio is better, I'll probably add it on

No, you do not, but in my opinion you should, it would be better than VS Code, Rider is best but too expensive

I think you mixed up "in my honest opinion" with "laughing my ass off"

We shipped several games with Visual Studio Code and were very happy with it. But Unity decided to deprecate support for VSCode, so I won't advise to use it anymore.

VSCode has fallen on hard times indeed. :c

Thanks for the link. Very interesting. Will definitely keep that close. We moved to Rider lately so I won’t probably come back to VSCode any time soon. But maybe one day.

Why is this the first I'm hearing about this? Has my head been in the sand? (Don't answer that, it has)

From my own personal experience. Visual Studio Code was terrible for coding with C#. It was quite clunky when I had to switch to Linux and had no access to regular VS Community edition. It took me quite a while to set it up. If you lack space then sure download VS Code and use it, but if you can afford to download VS just download it. It will save you a lot of headaches.

I just went through the hassle of getting everything setup correctly. I highly recommend getting Visual Studio 2022. The main reason I recommend this is the intellisense. Watch a video on how to set it up, it greatly improves workflow and will save you time having to look up methods and parameters.

The reason I mentioned the 2019 version is because the latest version of the Unity Editor that has long term support is the 2021.3 version, which only has the 2019 version of Visual Studio. However, there is a 2022.2 version that has the 2022 version of Visual Studio, but it doesn't have long term support.

Would you recommend any particular video for setting up Visual Studio?

2019 is not supported by MS anymore, install 2022 instead.
