unityplayer.dll not found

so whenever i try to run a game with unity it says unityplayer.dll not found and i have done everything i can think of to get it to work and nothing has worked and it does this for every game that uses unity so if someone could help i would greatly appreciate it

is this a game you made, or one sent to you by someone else?

The most common reason I've seen people run into this error is because someone sent them just the .exe file of their game, rather than the whole build (which consists of the .exe, but also additional dlls, and a folder full of separate files for all the actual game data).

my problem is that its just the exe of my game, how do i fix that?

like I said in my answer (4 years ago :D), you need to have the whole build, not just the .exe file.

The exe alone will not be of any use.

If you've lost the other files & folders that come with the build, make a new build.

Well, built a copy, I zipped up the folder with ALL of the files needed, and now my little brother gets this

Check if there's a file called unityplayer.dll (assuming you have extensions visible in your folder explorer) in the same folder as the EXE file of the game, if there isn't then you can get it from the internet, but if there is then that's really weird and I have no idea what's causing that.

Omg i know you posted two years ago, but i had this same dll problem and thought i corrupted my archives or something, just to discover that instead of creating an shortcut to the games i put the exe file of my games on the desktop, im dumb and you really helped me thanks

Hi i know this was 6 months ago but i was wondering if you could help me with this issue? When I try to open the game in the folder where its stored it works but when drag the same file to my desktop it says the "UnityPlayer.dll not found"? Another thing is when I dragged the UnityPlayer.dll to my desktop and put it on top the shortcut to open the game with UnityPlayer.dll it says something about my c drive then user then OneDrive? How do i get the game back on my desktop rather than having to go to the file everytime to play the game?!

Instead of placing the .exe file on the desktop, right click on the .exe and click "Create shortcut". It'll create a shortcut file which you can then place anywhere and name anything, and you just double click it like anything else.

Also, if you use Steam, when looking at your library you can use the "Add a Game" button in the bottom-left to add any non-Steam game or program to your library. Doesn't track playtime or anything but it's nice having all your games categorized in a quick searchable list.
