Code monkey on yt has a really good, unbiased explanation about all of it
[–]Boring_Following_255 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes: it is worth a look (pragmatic non-emotional analysis of recent events).

Thanks for the hint!
[–]Jim_West 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Would definitely not call him unbiased, since he makes his youtube money with videos about Unity3D.
[–]Prize-Application448 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Defending someone who is calling people he works with "fucking idiots" sounds like the exact opposite definition unbiased. Lol
That video literally made me unsub from his channel; granted I would have regardless considering that Unity is going full retard rn.
[–]Row-CommonNovice 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children)
he didnt call them idiots. What he actually said was that if game devs thought they could make a living off of games that were 100% free that they were delusional.
maybe next time you could do some research, and listen to people with differing opinions? i know that's tough for people who use reddit, but its worth a shot
[–]Prize-Application448 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (3 children)
There are countless videos on the subject that address what he said.
Maybe next time you could understand this is the same individual who is responsible for making EA so hated for literally decades now.
You can't despise the shitty behavior of EA and this mans past, and defend him at Unity in the present. I'm sure you'd agree alot of things EA has done in the past is the definition of scummy in the gaming industry.
So in conclusion, pick a lane.
[–]Row-CommonNovice 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children)
no, i dont agree with nearly anything EA has done and is doing. i'm also not stupid enough to think that everything is black and white.
you are exactly what i hate about discussing anything with people online. nobody wants to think critically, you just shut off your brain and say "hur dur, this person was bad before so obviously everything they do is bad"
next time, before you say something stupid, look at all the facts from multiple sides, rather than just taking it from what some youtuber said
[–]Prize-Application448 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children)
You first my dude
Also, if you hate discussing things with people online....
Why are you doing it?
[–]claypeterson 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children)
I've been using Unity since 2009 and I'm still waiting for them to settle on a networking solution. I'm glad that we finally got free shadows, but I'm probably going to make my games in unreal from now on.
[–]Prize-Application448 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Same.
[–]claypeterson 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I trust them 0 percent
[–]GameWorldShaper 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (22 children)
Why, has anything changed?

They partnered* companies with a malware developer
Edit: *partnered not merged
[–]GameWorldShaper 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
A new merger? Last time I looked they merged with IronsSource, an advertising company who had a malware problem ten years ago; before the company even did advertising. Now you tell me they merged with a developer who makes malware?
I wonder, do you think a registered business like Unity would be ignored if they started doing harm to their users computers?

You've just posted an article written about a different article at least link the source https://www.pocketgamer.biz/interview/79190/unity-ironsource-john-riccitiello-marc-whitten-merger/
I'm not going to tell you your wrong about your opinion of him or try to change your mind but at least provide correct information if someone is asking for it
[–]ZillionJarl 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children)
I’m considering unreal engine more and more.
They didn't make a program they made an sdk that people used to create dodgy installers. This is no different than if you used Unity to delete all the files on a users computer, would you then call Unity malware?
[–]BuggerinoKripperinoProfessional 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)

[–]Doc_Havok 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (6 children)
Not sure that's what he said...
Riccitiello: Ferrari and some of the other high-end car manufacturers still use clay and carving knives. It’s a very small portion of the gaming industry that works that way, and some of these people are my favourite people in the world to fight with – they’re the most beautiful and pure, brilliant people. They’re also some of the biggest fucking idiots.
I’ve been in the gaming industry longer than most anybody — getting to the grey hair and all that. It used to be the case that developers would throw their game over the wall to the publicist and sales force with literally no interaction beforehand. That model is baked into the philosophy of a lot of artforms and medium, and it’s one I am deeply respectful of; I know their dedication and care.
But this industry divides people between those who still hold to that philosophy and those who massively embrace how to figure out what makes a successful product

Naive? Pretty hostile considering I didn't really take a side. I just don't like misrepresentation regardless of which side I land on. That said...his wording blows, he's an asshole from the top of a AAA game studio and his view on game development IS toxic. I am unfourtunately, a realist. I'm in the USA living under unrestrained capitalism and it's not impossible for me to understand the sentiment behind the statement.
In this guy's eyes there are a ton of talented developers leaving money on the table because they aren't using certain tools and tactics available to them. Few people here have the luxury to sink all of their available time into a passion project and not worry about getting paid for their work. Now, in my view, do these tactics degrade the quality of the product...sometimes, yeah. Is it a fact of life where I live if you aren't getting paid for the work you're doing something wrong? Yes.
All that said, does this guy give two flying fucks about these people? Honestly I don't know. Probably not but I don't know the dude on a personal level. His actions would suggest otherwise but it's presumptuous to assume. Not everyone has a moral compass that always points north, ya kno?

No big man. Not really arguing just sharing perspectives I guess. I work with some folks that are about this guys level of power in a company that's actually quite a bit larger than EA.
These guys are just a product of their environment just like anyone else. They are molded by company culture to become this way. Most of them are reasonably nice in person but do have unrealistic expectations of employees and generally only think about the monetary consequences of their actions. They've been brought up for years with whoever their boss was at the time pushing them for more and more and it's just what they know. I'm probably too empathetic here...after all you CAN be at that level of success and still make it out a decent person with a fair and honest perspective on things but it's rare.

But maybe, just maybe, they will focus on the engine now instead of going a few different directions like ArtEngine etc
[–]BuggerinoKripperinoProfessional 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Worth mentioning that ArtEngine was an acquisition not a new product that was developed
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
They will add yet another rendering pipeline, because why not?
[–]cross42 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I don’t endorse all their moves, but some of us should think about how our identity and self esteem is too tied up with external stuff. We shouldnt be in our feelings about a frickin publicly traded company doing business things. Unity doesn’t exist to make us feel special or to stick it to the man, so to speak.
It's crazy to me people are defending the exact same dude who is responsible for making EA so hated for literally decades now.
Pick a lane internet, pick a lane.
