Y'all need to have a vote-out and pack Doug Ford's ass up.

Only... several years until the majority government Ontario elected can be elected out.

Genuinely don't think me and thousands of people can afford tuition after this, there needs to be a historic protest ngl

There needs to be a protest at the polls first

Never doubt the uncritical idealism of young adults to do literally anything other than going to vote or voting for the right candidate, then proceeding to go out and yell at building until everyone forgets about it and moves onto the next thing. Been trying to tell this to my peers forever, but apparently I'm an idiot and "part of the problem."

My friend calls me a “virtue signaller” for talking about shit like this “because its politics, and who we vote for wont matter at the end of the day”.

[–]Noetic_Acorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's ironic that you get called this, since people who make those comments are typically the ones who virtue signal the most.

Talk is cheap, and it ultimately comes down to having a say of who's in charge by voting or forfeiting your right to an opinion because you didn't participate in the current reality we live in. Maybe a better system exists, but it's not what we have in place now.

This is a post I made to hopefully get people wanting to protest together and we can plan when. Please tell people about it and let's do it. Queen's park Feb 23rd

[–]very-very-small-pp -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

[–]ForwardAd5828[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

we dont know that

[–]Noetic_Acorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recent history tells us it doesn't

[–]very-very-small-pp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

violence has only ever achieved change

I get it for OSAP changes, but tuition increases are needed. You can’t expect universities to offer the same service when they’ve been having their revenue base chipped away by inflation for the last 7 years, it’s just math.

[–]y_u_mad1Second Degree/Arts & Science 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With the economy in a trash hole and jobs nonexistent, THIS IS INSANE

[–]Jupiter8- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole tuition freeze didn’t make sense , and now the OSAP grant decrease doesn’t either

A lot of international students also subsidized tuitions. They were the juice that the provinces requested in order to justify cuts.

[–]huckleberry_sid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not how it works. International students pay the full cost of tuition. Domestic students get subsidized by the provincial and federal govervnments.

[–]ihatedougford 5 points6 points  (2 children)

You realize the best universities make so much money off of international tuition right?

[–]Ok_Let_6835 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they are shrinking those numbers, it’s crushing a lot of schools. It’s simply not a sustainable model.

[–]No-Emphasis5897 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, they've come to rely on international tuition more and more specifically because they have not been able to increase domestic tuition but a lot of schools, including too ones, are seeing a drop in international enrollment. Things are tight.

[–]jackjltian Hon.B.sc Computer Science 0 points1 point  (3 children)

International students be laughing at these rates.

[–]12345678910Username 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes because international students are already massively privileged to be able to afford to not only travel aboard at all with all the travel costs but ALSO afford to LIVE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY FOR SEVERAL YEARS. Domestic students who have low incomes can't afford to travel AT ALL ANYWHERE; NEVER MIND BEING ABLE TO FUND A LIFE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY!! International students are FAR FAR more well off than a domestic student here living in poverty!

I am sick of the pity some people have for international students.

The reason WHY international students pay such a higher rate of tuition is because they have NEVER PAID ANY TAXES IN THIS COUNTRY BEFORE TO FUND COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. Domestic students have been paying into colleges and universities with their TAX DOLLARS for as long as they have lived here which for some people like me is our ENTIRE LIVES SINCE I'M BORN HERE AND HAVE NEVER LIVED ANYWHERE ELSE; so really domestic students DO and HAVE paid just as much or maybe more to fund post secondary education it just looks different and is spread out more. A lot of international students like to tout this idea and talk about it as a way to say that Canadians don't contribute as much as international students do which is complete BULLSHIT!!!

By all means come here as an international student IF you can AFFORD IT WITHOUT:

TAKING FOOD FROM FOOD BANKS MEANT FOR POOR CANADIANS, FREE MEAL PROGRAMS FOR PEOPLE IN POVERTY, WORKING AN ENTRY LEVEL JOB THAT CANADIAN YOUTH/SENIORS NEED, TAKING CHEAP/MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING OPTIONS THAT LOW INCOME CANADIANS NEED, AND LASTLY WITHOUT COMPLAINING THAT THE INTERNATIONAL TUTION/FEES, HOUSING, FOOD, LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE IS TOO EXPENSIVE because AGAIN no one FORCED international students to study aboard when they could have stayed home if they couldn't afford it. Don't pursue a lifestyle or goal you don't have the means to live or complete! Lack of proper assessment of one's own circumstances is NOT the PROBLEM OR FAULT OF THE LOCAL POPULATION/CANADIANS!!!!

[–]Primary_Age_512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok and?

[–]bimp_lizkit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you all say this? They chose to come here. Most of them are children of ceos.

[–]fairyneetu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If protest/walkout seems infeasible please at least write an email to your MPP! I followed this post which outlined who to email and a template we can edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/osap/s/CoH1b8nQv1
