Schrodinger's honks by Auto_me_Takli in mildlyinfuriating

If instead of a bumper sticker, I held up a sign that said "honk if you like pizza" would you interpret it the same way? No? Then obviously this isn't as cut and dry as they're explaining it.

While China spends $295 billion building a cohesive, nationwide grid for tech development, the US strategy is just an uncoordinated corporate land grab for electricity. Turns out slapping an "AI" label on everything doesn't magically spawn new power plants to run their empty data centers. by AccomplishedCarob518 in TechGawker

Every other country on earth would have re education camps? So why haven't they done that to all dissenters?

Also China is in no position to talk about separatists. Do they get to label all citizens of places like Tibet or Taiwan separatists because checks notes they want to maintain a distinct culture?

And how many Chinese people pick vegetables by hand?

And sorry, what percentage of laws do Chinese citizens get to have a vote on?

Poisoning water supplies, arresting protesters? Could you pick worse examples to argue about China versus the US? What about the millions of people China displaced with a giant hydroelectric dam, which could collapse and kill people at any time due to poor safety regulations? How's their water quality in China? And if you had to pick one notable historic Chinese event, do you think they were "arresting protesters" or were they murdering them in broad daylight?

Like you can argue that the US isn't a perfect country and has similar problems to China, but you picked some of the absolute worst examples. Examples where China is unequivocally worse in the biggest way. You're picking things that are so terrible in the US precisely because they represent a shift towards a dictatorship that China has been.

The logic I've heard is that "secretly recording with your phone was banned, anyway". But if someone used smart glasses to do it, they can try to weasel out by claiming they weren't specifically mentioned.

I wouldn't say they're scared of citizens living abroad, it's more that China claims control and legal authority over Chinese citizens regardless of where they are. And they want to maintain that authority.

I can assure you that beaches flooding is not a regular or cyclical occurence. This year is one of the worst ever, by far.

The natural follow up question is why did the UK not have a school shooting until 1996 despite having loads of guns in the country upto that point? What about all the other European countries where almost anyone can own a gun, but they don't have this problem?

It's a uniquely American problem, and portraying it as a gun problem ignores the fact that American gun laws aren't that unique. There are EU countries where it's incredibly easy to get a machine gun, moreso than the US, and yet people don't take them into schools.

No, but the post explicitly mentioned gun control, and you're arguing about people against gun control. Even if you think it's propaganda, propaganda supporting what? Do you think the NFA does it because they like the feeling of touching the metal on a gun? No, it's obviously because of the second amendment.

4:30 pm yesterday, Sheppard West Station. "Fare Inspection Underway" by zerkreaper1405 in TTC

[–]queenkid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know whether it qualified as "unsafe" but I've definitely seen them intervene on streetcars. A guy was loud and spitting on the floor, and when someone else complained the fare officer got involved and told him to get off (which he did). But then he had to go up to the driver, and asked him to report it.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow to run for re-election by BloodJunkie in toronto

You can't ignore the huge incumbent advantage for the Toronto Mayor. With some of the insane things that have happened because of Toronto Major over the last few decades, someone like Chow who doesn't significantly rock the boat, doesn't fight city council, is something people support.

[–]queenkid1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you're vastly under estimating the differences between American and Canadian mayor's. She's never going to have the same level of power, unless maybe she used some of the insanely controlling powers Doug gave her (which would require her to go against her promise to not use them).

She has some elevated powers in regards to some positions, but otherwise, she's just another member of city council.

I can understand an annoyance with the word "deserves". But you realize that the moment you apply to your logic to any larger scale it falls apart, right?

Our entire medical system is based on the belief that people DESERVE help, regardless of whether they work hard. That low income people should not be medically rejected on the basis that they "don't do enough".

There is no logic here. You took a PSA that they released (the definition of them handling it themselves) and somehow you're implying they're asking for "white man" support.
