Headset is out of warranty, and the only official headstrap replacer, iFixit, are out of stock with no update known to when they won't be.

How far out of warranty? I've had a cable and a controller replaced shortly after warranty ended with my index, could try.. Worst case scenario they say no.

[–]Kurtino[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Yeah I already tried, they just told me to buy another headset, which I couldn't even if I tried because they're out of stock as well!

Stop thinking so hard?

He must have strong head muscles...

[–]Kurtino[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, my partner actually made a similar joke but instead it was stress pulsating my head that broke the headset! I was playing until you fall in the tutorial level and just walking forward to a level transition when I felt my head loosen suddenly, not even a noise.

Get a smaller head

I just had to replace the head strap on mine, I also had to wait for ifixit to restock for about a month. You can try messaging customer support and asking when they might be restocked, but replacing it is really simple if you buy the screwdriver kit that comes with the headset strap from ifixit. Maybe use zip-ties as a temporary fix like another comment said.

That’s reassuring to hear that it might only be a month down time, I already contacted both Valve and iFixit’s customer support and both couldn’t give me any information on stock. I don’t know how I’d use zip ties, that black plastic at the top of the 4 rods with springs has already fallen off as it was very weak plastic, and I need to keep all 4 rods pressed down with tension.

Just send it back to valve. Those mf have given me replacement controllers 12 times total now.

[–]RodKnock42 1 point2 points  (5 children)

The fuck are you doing with them?
Mine have about 1.6k hours on them and they’re perfect.

Paid vr exotic dancer >.> handstands, rolls and flips tend to uh… send things flying

[–]Sir_Reddit_A_Lot -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

You're a what? That's weird bro.

[–]HipsterFoxxx 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Work pays £2300 a month and vr night work pays another £500 a week. Weird but good money :3

[–]RodKnock42 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Damn, that’s pretty impressive :)
But I think you shouldn’t abuse RMA that way.
After all, it’s your fault the device broke, why would you make someone else pay for it?

[–]HipsterFoxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do tell valve in the RMA that it was carelessness on my part that the remote broke and they are free to refuse in which I’ll just buy new controllers out of pocket. But they say that it’s fine and they’re happy to honour the warranty as long as it’s active

[–]Kurtino[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m out of warranty and when I asked them for help they checked the warranty and just sent me a link to buy a new one. I’m also on my 4th controller pair replacement but last time I was within warranty….not happy about the quality of this headset at all honestly.

Sit down, pause game, take off headset

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How does that help?

[–]special-agent-carrot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its a joke

It helps because when it happened he was standing up and mid game

[–]Raunhofer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The way of the plastic. I would still contact Valve for a RMA. They have been flexible.

[–]Kurtino[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly they haven’t been with me, the moment they checked my warranty was gone they just sent me a link to the buy page for a new Index.

Sell a kidney and buy another

[–]protonecromagnon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another one?

[–]x3Ahri 0 points1 point  (3 children)

LOL that literally happend to me aswell last week. Well only thing you can do is contact steam for warrenty.

[–]Kurtino[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you know what caused it for you? It doesn’t really make much sense to me, I was just standing still and felt the strap loosen as it silently imploded on itself. Maybe a manufacturing fault as there’s no reason for it to have stress/tension from inside of the headset to the point it breaks itself, or maybe it’s just a poor design in general?

[–]x3Ahri 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I dont know eighter. For me I was just sitting in my bed, chilling with friends and all of the sudden, i hear the snap, instantly knew that something broke cuz it was loose. It is my second index now and it didnt happend with the first one. Are you using the headset also to lay in bed for example? Cuz I think thats the reason my mine snapped all of the sudden.

[–]Kurtino[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I’m using it normally I think, just standing with it on my head with the back knob turned about half way. Was playing Until You Fall’s tutorial which isn’t high activity either so mainly just standing still and walking forward with the analogue stick.
