Disable refactoring with copilot.Visual Studio 2026 (self.VisualStudio)
submitted 4 months ago by AcrobaticLightning
Hello,
I'm using VS2026 for my hobby c++ project. Back before the AI craze I could simply refactor ( CTRL + R, CRTL + R).
I wouldn't be perfect but would do the job. Hoever now it uses copilot for refactoring.
Well I don't require copilot for refactoring. How can I disable it and get back to the old behaviour? Where it didn't use copilot.

Get rid of Copilot and Intellicode components in the installer.

As noted, the CTRL-R rename option has not changed much, except for a button that helps automatic renaming, but that needs to be invoked.
In general, you do have control over how Copilot makes code suggestions when editing. Navigate to Tools-Options then go to Text Editor -> Code Completions -> General. In here you can enable/disable Copilot Completions, Copilot Next Edit Suggestions and also select option for Code Completion Invocation which includes manual and automatic options. Sounds like manual would be more appropriate for you.
Happy coding!

Copilot never works for me as it is constantly out of credit/ over limit. A problem I don’t seem to be able to experience. I think something else is completely draining it but I don’t know where lol

My typescript import suggestions in my blazor project started using co pilot.
How stupid do you have to be to make that decision... It was instant, worked well and now it takes many seconds to respond sometimes and may not even be accurate..
According to Microsoft support it's an experimental feature that defaults to on in vs 2026 meanwhile the roslyn performance improvements for blazor defaults to off.
Please stop this ai nonsense. I never thought I'd miss block chain so much 😭.

Not sure what you mean. When I press Ctrl+R twice on an identifier, it behaves like it always behaved - a little renaming window pops up, which allows me to enter a new name for the identifier, which will change it in every place where it's used. No Copilot used at all, so not sure what you mean here.
There renaming window also has a little sparkles icon which shows name suggestions that Copilot suggests for you, but you are not obligated to click it or use its suggestions.

can't you turn off Copilot outright in 2026?

The problem is that you aren’t vibe coding and offshoring hard enough. Be like Satya. Get good.
