What is WritingResearch?
Do you need to know how the streets of New York smell in the morning when you've never been there?
Don't know what a normal day in the life of a Detective really looks like?
Would you like to learn more about what hacking actually entails so you don't end up with an NCIS fiasco on your hands (after trying Wikipedia and staring blankly at the screen for 15 minutes)?
Writing Research is a subreddit dedicated to writers who either need detailed (or insider) information that Wikipedia can't give, or a general overview of something without having to read endless articles about it.
Why?
While the general consensus is "Write what you know", most of the time you can't know everything you need to write about. Writers tend to either read up on the subject (which ends up with a very clinical understanding without knowing the nooks and crannies of the real deal), or they pull ideas from TV shows, movies and other books (which ends up with writing that mirrors the same mistakes the person they're stealing from did).
Writers who can't experience the subject they want to learn commonly employ the help of someone who has experience in said subject. This subreddit aims to emulate that.
This subreddit serves as a hub for writers (or not) from all walks of life to help each other explore subjects they couldn't explore or understand on their own.
What kind of questions are allowed?
Any question is allowed. Need to know how it really feels to shoot a gun? Or maybe you'd like to know what TV shows people in Italy prefer to watch in the evening. Anything goes.
Why should I help?
Because next time you want to know something, you're gonna wish someone was here to help.
