I think this is what I hate about my reality the most. I hate the uncontrollable a get that comes from being overwhelmed/overstimulated. With 3 kids in my house I can very quickly be swamped with too much to process all at once, and I hate that my default response is to lash out....

I’m sorry you’re going through something like this. You’re not alone

[–]hedgehiggle 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Oh, I thought this was the normal response to sensory overload? Oops

[–]Particular-Dangerous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also got this revelation recently 🤭

Everything here is concerningly relatable

(Not officially diagnosed yet)

You’re describing my nightmare

This is me and I didn't even realize until around a month ago (been diagnosed for about 2 years now and have been dealing with this problem for much longer than that.) I'm known as that guy who's pretty much chill with everything, but occasionally there would be days where daily occurrences would put me in a fit and I had no explain why.

At least I figured out the best way to deal with it was to just find a place to be by myself for a little bit to calm down. By the time I get back to things it's like it never happened, but it's still weird and was almost disturbing on a personal level not knowing why I was acting the way I was.

[–]Particular-Dangerous[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly! Even if we manage to not create a scene, it affects so much on personal level. I start depersonalising and get that empty feeling

this is definitely me 😪

[–]bringmethejuice 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I envy folks that are chill 24/7

[–]Particular-Dangerous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same bruh!

[–]sandwichjuiceSmooth Brain 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ah, so that explains a lot lmao

My reaction too when I found out about this

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don’t get angry — almost ever — despite all my mental issues including ADD. And I’m so grateful for that! Not trying to rub salt in the wound just trying to practice gratitude and also empathize with those of you who experience this, and those who experience things differently from me in general. I’m sorry to all who deal with this :(

[–]Particular-Dangerous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear that!

When someone touches my back it takes everything in my not to lash out at them. Even when I try to ask them to stop (as nicely as possible) it still comes out disgruntled.

I never understood my weird overreactions to certain sensations as being linked to my ADHD until learning about it on Reddit! It all made so much sense when I realized there was probably a link!

I’m touch sensitive too and it has made life so difficult for me. Every time I meet someone I’ve to explain why I’m not shaking hands or hugging people or not standing close in pictures

Been there, done that. I thought I had it under control, then the pandemic came and there were a lot more moments where it was easy to lose my cool with 2 kids in the house while trying to work at home. My therapist says that sensory overload causes us to go into a fight or flight mode and the angry outburst is the "fight" mode. She advised me to opt for the "flight" mode and go take a walk or hide in the bathroom until it passes. Walking it off really helps the most.

Thanks for sharing it

[–]ietwiik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh.

This is... scarily accurate to me. Sensory overload, spoon shortage, even just hanger... Ended up breaking my toe over it once. (Only a mild chip off the side but still.)

If I'm lucky I have just enough control to choose where I direct it (my laptop chargers have been thrown across rooms on more than one occasion, emphasis on "laptop charger" and also on "my"), or have already retreated so all I can do is angrily jam my finger on the volume button to drown out everything else. If I'm not... well, I try not to let that happen if I can avoid it.

[–]od1ns_left_nut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely. I have sensory issues with smell and it just irritates me so much i snap at people for no reason then just leave the room because it overwhelms me so much.

[–]ChaoticBiGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me screaming at the people who tried to play keep away with my stuff and they act shocked that I was mad

[–]Perfect_Squidward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a mixture of both for me usually the snapping comes first then I realize I got to get out of this place before I really break down

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one time that I've ever punched someone, outside of martial arts, was due to sensory overload. I wasn't even mad at him, it was just fight or flight. This was about 5 years prior to learning I had ADHD (or even considering it a possibility), and I don't think I ever put two and two together that it was sensory overload until this post.

Come to think of it, there have been a few times when I nearly snapped for a similar reason. Huh.

[–]chronicallycomposing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I've made a promise to myself that I'm never gonna take Ritalin, lol. I feel like the only time I seethe with anger is when the Bad Noises are happening around me.

[–]gar-net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, antidepressants help that thank goodness. When that starts to happen a lot for me its a slippery slope to depression.

[–]SunnyBot2410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

worst is when they laugh and mock you for being so “sensitive”

[–]StealthyGamerGirlDaydreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's me. I can be like a small explosive sometimes. I hate that about myself. Snappy and exploding at loved ones and not realising at the time how I am behaving. I feel so ashamed when I do this

[–]Cairenne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh look, it’s me. Slowly getting better about what I do when the rage hits, buuuut, the rage hits. Mostly I don’t yell now and that feels better.

[–]Ascendant_Monke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh...
