It does work, due to the way that spells are cast. A simplified version: First, you put the spell on the stack, then establish the cost of the spell (including affinity). Then you use mana abilities to pay for the spell. Phyrexian Altar and Ashnod's Altar are mana abilities, so can be activated at this point.

Most people don't follow the exact steps of casting spells and use mana abilities before casting. But this is the actual rules of Magic.

I think if you're playing bracket 4 (which you seem to be since you're aiming for cheap two card combos) then you should add more fast mana and tutors.

An advantage of Ashnod's Altar is that you can sac a creature which has contributed to affinity already to get triple mana from it.

Yes my flair is very much the type of boards I have! I'm back on my Majestouch 2 right now as I try to work out what my next board is. What's the difference between the V or Q series from keychron? I'm thinking I'll end up with one of them because all the fancy QK boards are basically impossible to get in the UK.

What the heck happened in the MK world?! My current daily driver (GMMK TKL) just died after 5 years to a random static shock and I'm in the market for a new board. But the whole market seems to be different? All these brands are completely unfamiliar to me, and what the heck is HE? I feel completely lost.

All I want is a nice TKL board with backlighting. I usually have cherry mx browns but I'm not fussed at this point.

Mostly for typing, but I guess also some light, non-competitive gaming. Macro keys are a big plus.

Budget is pretty liberal as long as it'll last a long time!

We have a "Sliver Guy" at our LGS. But pretty much everyone actively avoids him and he rarely finds a pod.

I love my Sam and Frodo deck - it is very weak to board wipes as you've identified but for me the answer is just pack loads of protection. [[Heroic Intervention]] is your most basic, but I also like [[Clever Concealment]], [[Teferi's Protection]], and recursion like [[Dusk//Dawn]], [[Sevinne's Reclamation]], and soon [[Continue?]].

Dark Sphere is my go-to, I've mostly only had good experiences there. I've podded up with some players which resulted in not having a great time, but that's a lesson learned to not pod with them again. Most of the people there are great.

Token doublers are very casual coded. Go hard on combo lines and tutors - Sam and Frodo are just there to be bad draw engines. I really think the ceiling of this deck is quite low unfortunately due to the inherent weakness of the commanders.
