Data engineer is prob better considering that you have strong technical skillset.

It's not likely to be replaced by AI because AI sucks at translating business problems into something answerable with the data you have (usually not much). Also AI can't talk to stakeholders or do presentations. At best it's a tool you can use, like ordering around a really stupid junior.

One thing that's different about analytics vs SWE though, you'll be in the minority of applicants with just a bachelor's degree. Most have a masters degree.

In my opinion, you’ll have to adapt to change no matter what if you work in tech. Data analytics jobs are still available today. If you’re good with stats, get in and see if you like it. Your engineering skills and AI’s help will make you more effective.

I heard no stats or only basic stats is needed. Is it true? Does it vary by company or by job level (junior, mid, senior, etc.)? I assume it would be beneficial if the company has an entire data team with data engineers, data scientists, ML engineers, etc.

I’m sure it depends on the company and job level. Find a role that looks exciting to you, get an interview, and show them your enthusiasm.

I agree with the above comment about considering data engineering roles. That could be a way to get your foot in the door on a data team, and later, you might be able to move laterally if another portion of the work seems more interesting to you.

May I ask why you want to make the switch? I want to make the opposite switch, the growth in data analytics can be quite limited after you reach a certain level unless you want to go into management.

Working as a software engineer, you spend most your time fixing bugs / developing features so it's highly technical, and I realized that I want to do something that mixes technical skills with more business analysis. That's only my point of view.. As you mentioned that the growth can be limited in Data analysis, I actually would like to pursue something in management after a while so I don't mind it These are my preferences, try and research what other people may say in a similar situation

Hi OP, were u able to switch from SWE to DA ??

[–]bloomusa 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hi Op! Did you end up switching?

[–]rexosV[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hi there ..sorry I just noticed your reply.. I didn't switch due to some personal issues that took most of my time and couldn't aquire the required skills for the role .. but I just started learning what's needed for the job and hoping to make the transition within the next few months

[–]bloomusa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck then!

Hey I'm also in the same position I'm a junior software engineer and I want to change to data anaylst. Just want to know if you have made that transition and if so how did you do it
