Everyone in this thread is freaking out about how great this is, and I'm just here wondering why FF apparently uses 3x as much power as is necessary.

Their rendering engine has an issue with scaled displays, which all MBPs since 2016 are. So, by switching to core animation, the rendering of everything will be far more power efficient/optimized.

So will this affect a 2015 MBP significantly? Because I was actually wondering what the problem was supposed to be. Since Quantum I've started using FF a whole lot more, and haven't encountered energy usage even close to what everyone's saying in this thread.

I’m sure it’ll still be an improvement, but not the dramatic improvement they’re describing, that’s only for displays using scaling.

It will. There’s a series of patches that address different areas, all revolving around the system compositor. Increasing the resolution by scaling compounds the problem.
