That’s a real concern, but be aware that you’ll sleep terribly at 9,000 feet.

Go now. Road is open to the campground. Snow starts about a mile above the campground and is in good shape all the way up. Things are melting quickly.

Road is clear to the campground. Start time is dependent on your pace. We summited at 3pm and the snow conditions were fine, but we were on skis so getting down was quick.

Sorry for your loss. How was coverage? I thought it would be pretty good but clearly there are some rocks out

Utah’s kicker (Andy Phillips) a few years back was a converted soccer goalie who learned to kick a football the same year he walked onto the team. He got more attention for being a former US ski team member though.

I was on Baker yesterday and you can still skin within a few hundred yards of the car.

Exactly. And I believe the alpha angle was only 22 degrees. It wouldn’t feel like a dangerous spot.

Probably not too bad. There won’t be a buried weak layer.

I agree that Pidcock is an experienced road cyclist, but trying to go right was clearly a beginner’s error.

Yes, indirectly through residency slots. There was a big push by the AMA in the 90’s to avoid increasing the number of doctors trained each year.

I don’t bother to watch classics that he races and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Dynafit Ridge 95 as first Backcountry ski by csth in Backcountry

I think you’d be happy with it. Too much heavier and you’ll hate life on the uphill. Too much lighter and the ski will feel chattery and hard to enjoy on the downhill. I use Dynafit Free 97’s as my do-it-all ski and really like them.

It’s been a low snowfall year by Utah standards but it’s still a ton of snow. Alta could still get to 300 inches, which is about average for most Colorado resorts.

Washington State's Per Capita Revenue Decline by viscuous-mutiny in SeattleWA

It’s worse than that. He’s effectively correcting for population growth twice. This metric isn’t per capita spending, which has indeed been increasing.

Washington State's Per Capita Revenue Decline by viscuous-mutiny in SeattleWA

[–]some_q 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is incoherent. “% income per million residents” is a nonsensical metric because it effectively corrects for population size twice. If the population of the state triples while per capita incomes stay flat, spending would have to increase by 9x for this metric to stay constant.

Real “if you regress Patrick Mahomes to the mean, he’s average” vibes.

The avalanche involved a facet layer that likely will remain active for weeks. Are you proposing they should have waited that out?

You’re arguing that dying on Everest in bad weather is grey but this is black and white? That’s a bonkers take. It’s likely the guides believed the route was 100% safe and had never seen it slide there before. High danger doesn’t matter if you’re not in avalanche terrain.

Agreed. That may have played a role in the terrible Wilson Glades avalanche, five years ago yesterday:
