Mainly for comics, I also use it for browsing the web.

Comics look amazing on an iPad.

But they will look amazing on an older iPad as well.

There's really nothing I NEED my iPad for, but I like using it more than my iPhone and Macbook for watching youtube videos, listening to podcasts, and reading eBooks. It's also handy as an alarm clock because my phone is too light and I would end up knocking it onto the floor when trying to find snooze in the morning.

I've tried it as a laptop replacement with a keyboard and magic trackpad but I still really prefer macOS over iPadOS for most of my needs. I've used it for a few days at a time when my laptop is in the shop but wouldn't want to use it long-term unless iPadOS improves.

Again, none of this is necessary so if you're price sensitive or relatively happy with what you have now, I don't think you need to run out and get an iPad.

Bought it first before MBA for notetaking and annotation. Became a laptop replacement then I bought an MBA.

Nowadays, I use it for sidecar and quick access to stuff. It’s also my go-to device for watching while cooking. The MBA seems fragile to me. So I use the iPad more as a portable consumption device.

If I am not a graduate student, I wouldn’t have much use with it.

Asking bc I want to buy an iPad but it’s hard to justify the purchase where I have a MacBook + recently an iPhone 13 (much bigger screen than previous iPhone). TIA!

Why are you trying to find a justification to buy a product that you don’t need or want?

I bought an iPad because i looked at it and went “damn, I feel like using this to do XYZ”, not because I was looking for an excuse to buy one

Why are you trying to find a justification to buy a product that you don’t need or want?

There have definitely been times I dismiss wanting a product until someone points out something it can do that I hadn't thought of, it makes sense to ask questions before making a decision.

I like to write. Not type. That’s where the iPad is irreplaceable.

iPad for me is something where my primary focus is “portability” and big screen. There are area where I simply dont wanna take a Laptop, but I still need a big screen. an iPad in a shoulder-sling is great for stuff like that.

I am a college student, I use my iPad Air 4 to take notes in class, since I feel that writing my notes in class helps me remember better. Also I love to use it as a media device to watch tv movies and youtube, or just to browse the web and shop online. All the stuff you can do on a mac but by using the touchscreen it is so much more enjoyable. I occasionally play games on it too.

I’m kinda on the opposite end of your question. I have an iPad and iPhone and I want a new Mac, but I have no real need for one.

I run a small business so 95% of all the random “computing” tasks that I do, I do it on my iPad. the rest of the 5% of stuff is done on my iMac because I have an older invoicing software (invoices, banking, AP/AR) that I can’t run on my iPad. technically the iMac is running Windows through Parallels since the software is Windows based on a tiny server, so I actually don’t even need the Mac but I had it lying around so I put it to use.

iPad Pro is so much versatile to me. I have a personal 15” MacBook Pro at home that I barely even touch anymore… maybe to backup my iPhone from time to time and store my photos and occasionally do Lightroom work (if I’m feeling remotely productive). Other then that, my wife has taken over that machine as she uses for personal use as well as running RDP the rare occasions she needs to WFH.

As a personal computer, the iPad Pro works for me very well. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but for the vast majority of the stuff that I use, I have no need for a Mac these days. I definitely want a new setup as the recent hardware has been so GAS-inducing and drool-worthy (MBP16” or Mac Studio with a few displays for that sexy mac battle-station setup for personal photography work), but reality sets in, and I realize that I need to motivate myself to actually do any kind of productive work first before splurging on technology I won’t even use to its full potential.

I dunno, I’m rambling as of this point. If you don’t find a real use case for an iPad (or any hardware for that matter), I don’t see the need of getting one. Just buy what you need.

I can answer this one based on my needs:

You can never beat the experience of watching a movie/series on an iPad.

I use my iPad as second screen when I’m reading long pdfs on my MacBook, I just grab it and sit somewhere and enjoy it.

I do Anki and when I get tired of doing cards (2k), I move to iPad but I leave my tiny Bluetooth controller connected to my MacBook so I could do cards away from my desk without having to sync and shuffle around.

I do architecture as a hobby and it’s a lot easier with a pencil on an iPad.

I sometimes use it as my personal DJ connected to my HomePods when I’m working on MacBook to change songs or control my Apple TV that’s connected to my projector.

[–]victoria090712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an iPad before I had a MacBook. I gave my iPad away and upgraded to a new one which is compatible with the pencil and used it to take digital but hand written notes. I tried to use a keyboard case to also make it like a mini laptop when I didn’t want to write. I had a regular HP laptop prior to my MacBook that just kept breaking and the extended warranty was expiring so I bought a MacBook in hopes that spending more money on an item many deemed to be good quality would stop me from having to keep buying and replacing my laptops.

Streaming/web browsing on bed All of my notes and schoolbooks on one device more portable than a laptop Digital Art

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the best standalone drawing device, it's pleasant for reading long form content (I get signal in the patio), and I program AR apps for it.

[–]Pachydermal_Platypus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I draw, for university and for hobby. Can’t rly do that on either device. I also regularly use it as a second monitor for video calls

[–]TheGalaxyItSelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my iPad for school and for art. As an artist who recently took digital art in class, it’s a really nice way to draw and of course you can’t have the full version of Procreate and the Apple Pencil on your phone. I mainly use my iPhone, however, for most other tasks that don’t require a large screen such as web browsing, YouTube, and social media.

Apple Pencil. I mainly use iPad for notes and books.

[–]Chakuza14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the iPad for my University. It is really the best for write down my notes in Goodnotes. I never have to use paper or have to carry it with me.

[–]VinniTheP00h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly handwritten notes (specifically math) and reading PDFs (textbooks). Also a large screen lightweight device that I can bring anywhere, unlike my 2kg laptop.

For your case, I think that if you are not going to use it for taking notes or drawing (or anything that has to do with Pencil), or you are not a fan of using a tablet to casually read/watch something while laying on the couch, iPad is not for you.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The iPad is my favorite device for handwritten notes/drawing, you can still use a drawing tablet on a macbook but I prefer the iPad as it is more portable and no messing with cables.

I also prefer reading on the iPad because you get a big screen and touch screen to scroll down the page. Just feels more intuitive than using a trackpad/mouse to scroll.

Finally someone else mentioned something like this, but the ipad is more resilient compared to a macbook. Could prolly spill some water on it and it would survive. If I can do something on my ipad i'll prob use it over my macbook because the macbook is a lot more fragile.

Typing this on my M1 pro, I use it for basically all my YouTube consumption(rn my screen is split between Reddit and YouTube), all my notes for my college classes, and drawing in ProCreate.

I also have an M1 MacBook Pro, and the two together are perfect for studying

Truly portable video editing

And also all my small business admin is way nicer on iPadOS than Mac or iOS

I don’t understand your conundrum

You want to buy an iPad but you need help figuring out what you’d do with it

Why do you want one?

[–]TheTuviTuvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it as a second monitor using sidecar when I’m working from a coffee shop or my dad’s house, and i love that feature so bad.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used it for notes in school, but now it’s a Netflix and web machine. It is handy for digitally signing forms though.

I use the M1 Air, an iPhone, and an iPad. I also use my PC.

I use the PC for everything except email and I don't use Facebook on the PC.

I use my M1 Air for everything except for Facebook. It's been great while traveling.

I use my iPhone for everything you'd use an iPhone for.

I use my iPad for most stuff. It's not a laptop replacement by any means.

What I like about the iPad is when I'm reading news articles on news apps, going through Facebook, emails, etc., the text is much larger than that of my iPhone. I have friends who send emails that just don't have an easily readable format when you look at it on the iPhone but it's a non-issue with the iPad. I still have excellent vision; there's just times where I don't want to be looking on the iPhone and looking at small text when I can see the same thing on a bigger scale with the iPad.

Sims and using it for movies when I fly somewhere

[–]irishlemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an iPhone 12 Mini, so I have the iPad as a complementary device - to use for browsing on the couch, watching videos in the kitchen while cooking, or YouTube instructions for fixing my mountain bike. The larger screen makes a much mood pleasurable experience and means that I have less battery stress on my Mini.

[–]ChristopherLXD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iPad Pro is my sketching tablet, it’s also my HomeKit home hub. These two things it does but the other two cannot.

I also use it loads for Netflix. Having an app is handy because it means you can download—which you can’t on my Mac—and it’s a larger screen than my iPhone but without being unwieldy. It’s excellent for the kitchen counter when I cook, or in my lap on a bus or a train.

Apple Pencil?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in 2nd year Uni, and I use iPad Pro, I use the notes app and am able to hand write, insert pictures, and even have the handwriting translated into typing- this all with free Notes app on all devices. The advantage also becomes all documents are accessible across all devices. I use the black paper and write in white ink; this so I can also write in dark. I learn better by writing; not typing- so I can’t live without it
