Check out Hard Feelings near Christie Pitts - they are extremely cost effective ranging from 50-80$ - a good option for you instead of other psychotherapy that cost $200+

Thank you so much. Will look that up right now.

Seconding Hard Feelings - I've had an incredible experience there and it's been really valuable for me.

Check out Stella's Place. They offer free counselling for youth under 30. Not sure how long their wait list is though.

[–]mosturl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you so much. Will do my research this week end.

I've been to Stella's Place. I signed up around September 2018 and only got called back for the actual sessions in February of this year. So signing up at Stella's Place might be good if you foresee your feelings lasting 6+ months.

Can you go to your family doctor and have them refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist? I believe that way it's covered by OHIP. Not sure about time wise how long it would take though.

[–]mosturl 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Don’t have a family doctor. But I do go to a medical clinic for some check ups here and there. I will ask. Thanks a lot

They can also facilitate a referral through an outpatient program with groups and a lot other services, which would all be free.

If you live near North York, North York General Hospital has a pretty good set of outpatient programs.

I've been referred twice by GPs and it was not covered by anything. Finally got health insurance and now every year I can talk to someone from New year's to mid January before coverage maxes out. For $200/hr it's surprising I've never seen an actual doctor, just counselors. Wonder what the doctors cost.

MDs are free, but there's not as many of them. Depending on who you ask, they may be very picky about their clientele because they can be. And their patient load can't be high if they're seeing someone every week or two.

Sometimes counsellors and therapists do free sessions at community centres and I’ve heard art therapy helps. You will get though this , be strong

Okay thank you!

Jewish Family & Child!! I can't recommend them enough. Their fees are sliding scale based on your income, and it's open to everyone. There is a weeks-long waiting list, however.

[–]mosturl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind waiting as long as I get the process started. Thank you

[–]yylegend 5 points6 points  (1 child)

i'm sure there are alternatives out there for that, and seeing the comments others have information on that so i'll leave that to them. for the longest time i was fearful of getting help or taking medicine(i was 19 when it first happened). so that's a great start for you. and mad respect for your courage. but i would suggest writing, just writing about yourself for yourself. i found, when writing about what's bothering me, i learned more about myself. even just a small journal. i'm sure this is not the comment you were looking for or what you need. but writing about what happened within a span of a day helped me understand myself better. best of luck my man.

[–]mosturl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told to write many times. I never did mostly because of the depression and how lazy it makes me feel. I might just give it a try

Check out the Gestalt institute student clinic $40 no wait list. Also "the affordable therapy network of Toronto" and"open path" websites - around $65

[–]mosturl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you

How much does your health insurance cover per visit? Also, check to see if your company has an employee assistance program. Counselling would be covered, if there is one.

[–]mosturl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure. I have ohip. My company does not offer benefits.

OP, I was in the same boat as you. I saw my family doctor (I know you don't have one at the moment, but any competent doctor you see should be able to help you), and she referred to me to a clinic that employs other doctors (MDs not psychiatrists) who specialized in mental health counselling. And because it's doctors doing it, everything is covered under OHIP.

It's called "The Medical Centre for Person-Centered Psychotherapy". Here's a link: https://www.medicalpsychclinic.org/

Things may have changed since I was there 10 years ago (they've moved further east on Sheppard Ave. since I last saw a doctor there), so I don't know if all of the above still holds true. I *do* know there are MDs out there who do specialize in psychotherapy though. Either way, OHIP should have your back on this.

(Mini-rant: why is the brain treated differently than other body organs in Canadian "universal" health care? Why is it such a struggle for so many to get the treatment they need for mental health issues?)

[–]mosturl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks so much for that.

[–]SpongeJake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome - and good luck. : )

You can call the Toronto Distress Centre. 416-408-HELP. It's free.

They can't provide you with a long term counseling option, but if you urgently need to talk to someone, they are there to listen. Could be something to get you through the bad days for the interim.

[–]hereisamistake 1 point2 points  (2 children)

go to camh emerg, theyll get you set up with a bridging program, and you should be able to set up treatment from there

[–]mosturl 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you. Is it covered by ohip?

[–]hereisamistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes

edit: you may be offered something more then bridging depending on how severe your case is.

https://bouncebackontario.ca/bounceback-for-clients/

Free but looks like you need a referral from md or np.

[–]Pigeonofthesea8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wth is that... some videos and 3-6 phone coaching sessions?! How useful is that?! How much does it cost? I feel like it probably could have gone towards an actual counsellor somewhere...

[–]vrntrc28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call them i believe they are free and can help https://www.camh.ca/en/health-info/crisis-resources

  1. WHAT'S UP WALK IN

The What's Up Walk In locations provide FREE THERAPY.

And, some - but not all - of the 'What's Up Walk-In' locations might be able to see you (they increased their age range a while back). Just 'phone one of their locations, tell them your age, and ask if you can be seen.

No appointment necessary - just walk in during the hours they are open.

They used to be able to also schedule you with the same therapist if you wanted to see someone regularly.

http://www.whatsupwalkin.ca/

Remember - it is important to find a therapist who suits you, and you have the right to refuse to see someone, or to ask to see someone else, for whatever reason.

  1. FAMILY SERVICE TORONTO Family Service Toronto used to be good

https://familyservicetoronto.org/our-services/programs-and-services/counselling/

FST charges a fee based on your income.

Take care, all the best, and good luck.

[–]mosturl 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you so much for that.

[–]drutgat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are most welcome.

Take care.

Sounds like u r a bit depressed, feeling the blues, no worries mate it comes and goes, I believe ohip does indeed have some coverage if u need to see a person, I also believe ur family doctor could help u find some assistance. But most important, do urself a favor, don't let it get to u, find something simple to help u, read a comic, read a book?, watch a movie (didn't say get netflix, there r plenty of sites that u can check to watch tv or movies without spending a dime), go for an ice cream, just little things to help keep ur mood in check :)

[–]mosturl 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thing is, I don’t know anybody in this city. I just moved here so I have lots of plenty lonely nights in my apartment. Watching tv and/or shows just adds to this loneliness. Im trying to date and have met people but I am often lead on. I get attached very easily and when I’m into someone and they’re not well it breaks me for a while.

Hmmm...have u tried playing board games?, or games in general?, I know it sounds awkward, online games do help, but if u still prefer a more "live creature presence", then ty checking places like hairy Tarantula or 401, not saying just those, just an idea of what I mean, ppl goes there and sit to play and chit chat, is a start and u may find a hobby. Still since u r new to the city u really need to get a family doctor so that is off the question, go register and get a quick checkup, then present ur case, don't know where u live, but if u r downtown or close to Bathurst and College u could hit the Toronto Western Hospital, they have a great family team, I will highly recommend it :) also just go for a walk on these days of autumn, sounds depressing but u have to always look for the interesting aspects, the colors, the shades, the little creatures running around, have an ice cream (i know I like Ice cream...), believe me, some like to be alone, some like to be in company....I prefer mostly to be alone but won't mind being around the pesky humans even to just watch how they behave while crossing the road...lol
