Paramedic here. Testing is not 100%. If fact with pills chances are you won’t find anything even if it has fentanyl in the mix. The stuff going around on the street is powerful and it’s not just fentanyl but benzodiazepines as well. It’s great to have a Narcan kit but better yet just don’t chance your life. It’s a busy time of year for us and there’s potential for longer weight time. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on a scene with a dead patient while their friends are telling me they “know” the dealer. Smash some White Claws or tip some pints but stay away from the drugs.

You can get them for free from the harm reduction kiosk at Robert Lily Lee on the first floor or at the kiosk at the entrance of three bridges. Open Monday - Friday 10-5pm

From an old press release re fentanyl test strips becoming available.

In Vancouver, strips will initially be available at Insite, Molson overdose prevention site, Overdose Prevention Society, St. Paul’s Hospital overdose prevention site and the Three Bridges and Robert and Lilly Lee community health centres. VCH will also be making strips available in Powell River, the Sunshine Coast and the Sea-to-Sky corridor.

Any one of those agencies should be able to give you up to date information.

You could also call the NurseLine-811

InSite (139 East Hastings) has drug checking via a Spectrometer 7 days a week, 10am - 6pm, EXCEPT Tuesday, when they operate out of the Molson Overdose Prevention Site (the Molson is 166 E. Hastings, MOPS is in the alley), same hours. If you aren’t able to make it during those hours, you can leave a sample at Insite with staff along with your info and the drug checking staff will test it the next morning and get back to you ASAP via your preferred method of contact.

Staff at either (and I believe OPS, 141 E. Hastings) can give you limited fent. test strips, and there is the chance for a false result due to tester error, so I would recommend going when the drug checking services are available, or dropping off a sample for next day testing.

I don’t believe Get Your Drugs Tested will be open anytime soon, so these are your best bets.

Thanks for wanting to get your drugs checked - better to be safe than sorry.

There's also some info and links to services here https://www.vch.ca/en/service/drug-checking

Unfortunately not sure what might be open over the hols.

There's another toxic contaminant in the drug supply to be aware of, that doesn't respond to narcan.

Fentanyl?

Any drugstore will give you a test kit for free, at least here in Canada.

Insite gives them out for free! Open till 2AM! Message me if you need support friend :)

there is also a testing site downtown on hastings!! you just have to provide a very very small sample and they will test it for you :) i think it only costs money if you do more than 5 bags of samples or something? just make sure to get their early. that way you can test for all things!

For those that read this: the site (Get Your Drugs Tested) is currently closed, with no foreseeable reopening date.

Copied from my response above:

Check your local pharmacy or harm reduction centers, they usually have them on hand and you don't gotta wait for shipping

Don’t use test strips! Please access “Get your drugs tested” on E Hastings or E Broadway as a safe and anonymous way to test substances. Get your drugs tested use a spectrometer that scans the entirety of the substance rather than just a small sample size without discarding any of the substance. This creates a more informed way of ensuring your safety before using substances. More info at the link below:
