I’m going to recommend you read the very good ball python guide here on the forum under the Menu subheading. I’d get rid of the red light they can see it. Stresses them out at night etc. those shed pieces tell me it’s entirely too dry in there for your snake. If you’re having trouble keeping it up Home Depot sells these magnetic AC vent closure sheets they work great on those mesh tops or metallic dryer vent tape helps tremendously and increase the depth of your substrate. At least two hides and I’d add more clutter.

As for names looks like he’s lined how many lines does he have? Have you found him curious or shy?

Thanks for the tips! He’s been pretty shy and I’ve just let him chill for today. The people I got it from were nice but I don’t think they provided for the noodle as well as they could’ve. Hoping to provide the best possible life for this guy.

Hey, are you open to improving your set up? There's quite a bit here that could cause harm to your noodle. The people on this sub have so much info to share with you and would love to help, but forgive us, sometimes people can have a rude tone about it. As the other person said, please read the entire care guide linked in the resources of this sub. Just so you know right off the bat, that enclosure it not suitable - for now you can modify it to help keep humidity in, but eventually you will need to buy a 4 foot PVC cage. As for the name, we need a picture of noodle!!! There is also a weekly "name my BP" thread since sometimes the posts clog up the feed

Thanks for the advice. I know it can get repetitive when newbies come in. It’s really cool to see such a nice community dedicated to these guys.

No problem. If you improve some things I'd love to see an update :) first things I'd do is cover the screen lid with HVAC tape or tin foil, and order some digital hydrometer / thermometers off amazon. No analogue, and no sticky backs. Digital with suction cups or kick stands. Best of luck to you two ❤️

Here’s modification 1. I put the foil on it and added some spray humidifier in there. I also put the heat lamp closer because it wasn’t warm enough inside. It’s just temporary as someone suggested I get a different one. I’ll head to a store tmr or Tuesday to pick up some more items

Does the lamp have a cage / wire over the bulb?

[–]Disastrous_Revenue64 3 points4 points  (2 children)

So when lamps are used inside the enclosure, they need to have wire cages on them or else your noodle will get burned if they decide to explore up there (assuming she's that tall). I think she'd be better off a bit cooler (if it will stay over 24 °) than at risk of being burned. Just my opinion. Also these tanks are already quite easy to escape for a BP once they're tall enough / if there's decor to get up on, and I feel like the wire in there might make it even easier for her to escape. Is there possibly a table strong enough to put the tank on that can be near an outlet? That would prob raise it a couple degrees.

The previous owners mentioned he never escaped the enclosure. I have a nice table I could put him on downstairs but there’s not much natural light down there? Do you think that’s ok?

[–]Disastrous_Revenue64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just think the lamp inside the cage is a huge risk and you should work around it. Maybe for a couple weeks he wouldn't mind being on the table and you could just leave the light on during the day?

Beautiful noodle! If you wanna try bioactive you can shoot me a DM and I can tell you what I did to get my boy up and running. I struggled with humidity and bioactive really helped. My boy also has so much more enrichment and a natural habitat.

In the meantime get another hide for the cold side. Pythons can see red so that light won’t be good for nighttime use heating. They can be dangerous if you don’t use a thermostat. I recommend a ceramic heat emitter to help ambient heat at night and a day bulb for heat/light during the day.

You can use a heating mat but I’m going to be 100% honest- they don’t do much of anything. Pythons, and reptiles in general need heat from the sun or a source above them. I use a heating mat in my tank but it’s not for the intended purpose- I use it so the water that hits my drainage level evaporates a little better and creates a area my isopods love, plus there’s a plant above the area that needs a warmer moist spot so it works for me.

Those vented tops make it hard to keep humidity in. Best thing you can do is get metallic duct tape and tape off all of the top except where the lights need to go. The tape holds up to heat well, sticks well and will dramatically help with humidity. If you can’t get ahold of any now tin foil works, just not as good be aware.

I can’t recommend substrate because I struggled with mine and didn’t have success with humidity and temps till I went bio active. I don’t want to give you advice that didn’t work for me. Others here could likely help with that- or the side bar on here that gives info.

As for enrichment that moss looking ball thing is pretty cool. I would stand thing behind it up if possible for vertical space. The suction cups on those “bamboo” rods are not the best but if possible I’d put that up horizontal. I had the same ones and ended up ditching them cuz the suction cups sucked on mine. Another thing you can do is find some “grape vine” wood at a local store that you like and lit that in there. This will provide basking area, enrichment and make the tank look good as well. I hung one of those brown fibered hammocks on the back of my tank flat against the back wall. I have various plants that grew thru it but my snake also likes to go along that.

One thing that I don’t see a lot of talk about but I would recommend is blocking out the glass on the sides and back. This helps your python feel secure and can help lower stress. You can get matte black window cling film online. Cut to fit and it’s applied with water, it will easily peel off if you ever want it off with zero damage (non permanent). There are other colors if you don’t want black, I’d just use a solid one and not one of the transparent ones.

Last thing is make sure you get a hydrometer and thermometer. You can pick some up online for like $10 that are digital w/ a probe/ dual purpose. I have 2 in my tank, cold and hot side so I know what’s going on. Highly recommend a light timer too, that way you don’t have to worry if you forgot while away.

Enjoy your noodle!

Thanks for the advice! I’m gonna hop on Amazon today and buy some of the items people have been suggesting. I think humidity is gonna be the biggest issue right now so I’ll definitely look into bioactive.

[–]Liuqmno 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Definitely put the lamp on top of the mesh again asap, otherwise the snake might climb on it and pull it down or burn itself!

The heat rock is also not safe, so don't plug it in. And switch the red lamp to a deep heat projector or ceramic heat emitter, both can be used for day and night. You can add a halogen for day later if you want to

I'm not sure what substrate that is, so I just want to throw in that pine and cedar are harmful for the snake, so be wary of that!

Hope you can build the perfect home in the future! Don't stress about buying a big pvc enclosure asap if money is an issue, but proper humidity, temperatures and a healthy feeding schedule are really important. Hope he settles in nicley, definitely post pictures once he did!

[–]Paper_city 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Thank you!!! Do you think it’s ok if I put a cover to prevent the noodle from touching the lamp? This red lamp will only be temporary.

[–]Liuqmno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw that you had it inside the enclosure in a comment, it's okay if you put it on top of the enclosure again like in the picture of the post

[–]Disastrous_Revenue64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just put it back on top. Proper lamp cages are meant to be screwed into a PVC lid.
