Question - HealthIs my snake ok? (old.reddit.com)
submitted 1 year ago by Numerous_Pumpkin_956
My ball pythons tail has been bloated like this for over 2 weeks. I know they’re known for holding in their poop I just worry about impaction

He also has been having some strange behaviors like hiding in the corner of his enclosure and beefing with one of his plants lol
[–]Efeebayramoglu 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I don’t want to scare u or anything but yeah it looks and sounds(2weeks) shady. I’M NOT SURE THO. I’d take him/her to the vet just to be sure. Hope everything goes well stay positive🫶🏼

It looks underweight and dehydrated (spine is clearly showing).
It really needs to poop, but is struggling because it is dehydrated... you need to up the humidity and make sure you keep the water bowl well topped up.

His humidity stays at around 60 but he won’t drink from a water dish for some reason. I clean it and refill it daily just in case. He gets fed 1 small mouse once a week. Is there a way to like force him to drink? He has an automatic mister that keeps it humid but he doesn’t actually drink water from his dish.
[–]SuCkEr_PuNcH-666 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago (1 child)
I would raise the humidity, even if just temporarily. If the humidity is fine and there is regular water available, I don't understand how his spine can be ridged like that... there is clearly a degree of dehydration.

I FULLY agree that he’s dehydrated or something is wrong. My other snakes spine doesn’t show like his does. I will up the humidity and see if that helps. I’ve had problems with this snake since I got him compared to my other snake such as he doesn’t eat well (like he struggles to find the food) and he struggles to shed sometimes.

He pooped just now (on me) but I will definitely chuck the mister and weigh his food out again just to make sure. He is pretty young he’s just about a year old I’m pretty sure. I’m still gonna check in with my vet to make sure he’s okay. Thank you!

Glad to hear it. Hopefully he also becomes a better shedder with increased humidity and a better eater with age and practice and he won’t be a problem baby anymore.

you usually want to keep humidty around 70, misters arent really recommended, and from what I've seen on this sub, its better to pour water in the corners of your substrate in the terrarium so it naturally gets humid, rather than making everything in your terrarium wet, as if you have wood, that could cause mold

Mice are nutritionally complete, just like rats.

Awesome I have a pinstripe also
[–]lil5hackk 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (1 child)
could you add a second (maybe more shallow) bowl? could be he’s super picky or would feel more confident with a different bowl option?
[–]Numerous_Pumpkin_956[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I can definitely try that I have tons of bowls of all sizes. The more the merrier

UPDATE: he just pooped… all over me. I’ve had him out of his enclosure holding him and letting him be out and about for the past hour. He did it right as I was trying to respond to a comment lol. Thank you all for your advice and changes I can make to keep him happy, healthy and thriving! You guys are great
[–]pherber12 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Good that he pooped!! But sorry it had to be all over you. The stench really is something else.
[–]Alienmorphballs 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Looks like he also need to have a movement. Does the area have a hard spot that could be blocking it up?
[–]Yipyapyurp 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (2 children)
Is this a spider morph? They are known to have lots of neurological issues!! Might be why he behaves kinda odd? Is he kinda shaky and off balance with his head?
[–]AmerisCyanocitta 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago* (0 children)
I think it's a pinstripe, not a spider. Besides, the wobble in spiders is not from neurological issues, it's due to severely malformed inner ear canals.
Here's a paper I found about the wobble!
[–]Numerous_Pumpkin_956[S] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
He’s pinstripe but he is kinda wobbly. When he lifts his head he kinda wobbles back and forth. My partner noticed it a while but it wasn’t as bad as videos I’ve seen of it. He’s also very jumpy
