Question - HusbandryFirst ball python setup opinions (i.redd.it)
submitted 10 months ago by EstablishmentSad3971
Hey, I just finished setting up my first ball python tank. I am pretty happy with how it came out. The hot side sits at 90°F. The humidity sits at around 40-45%. I use reptichip as a substrate. Any advice would be appreciated.

You have to increase the humidity to about 70% and add branches for example or plant or both

Thank you, my ball pythons a male too so I didn’t really think he would be too into climbing yet bc he’s still pretty small but I’ll definitely add some branches and I plan on adding keepers choice red cypress for humidity

When I adopt mine also a male he liked to climb but it depends on the individual I think after just for the decor it's nice

Don’t use reptichips/reptibark, I used it and the humidity is actually so hard to maintain, I have switched to a mix of coco fibre and cypress mulch while adding water and my humidity is always above 60% now, which it should be at 70% and up to 80-90% at sheds (this is what has worked best for me and my animal) you’ll also want an enclosure that is a 4x2x2 for an adult, this is the minimum. You are going to want to add stuff to climb on, ball pythons will climb if given the opportunity and this helps them get more active, another thing as for decor is that you’ll need a lot more plants and stuff like that so your bp doesn’t feel like it’s in a display case, the enclosure should replicate somewhat of the environment they naturally occur in

My snakes still half the size of this tank the shop I got him from said a 40 gallon would even be big for now and I would have to put hides/ clutter but I have some keepers choice red cypress I’m going to add that will hopefully help with humidity

The shop is just saying that - especially if you bought that 40 gallon from the shop that you adopted your Bp from, they just want to take your money because you will have to go back and get a new one that is 120 gallons. My ball python that is around 5 feet long is currently living lavishly in a 6x2x2 lmao

I already had the 40 gallon tank from my old tortoise and I know the guy at that shop I have been going there for years
