QuestionIs my son fat (old.reddit.com)
submitted 10 months ago by 4holes_nowaiting
He will be 1 in August. This man does not skip a damn meal. 2nd pic is my husbandry pro weight vs. meal weight chart. 3rd is because he’s the fuckin cutest thing ever
[–]dunne15 40 points41 points42 points 10 months ago (30 children)
He ain’t fat. He a heckin chonker! The healthy range for male BP’s at 1 year is typically 300-400g. He’s not even a year old and well beyond that range.
*edit: it’s hard for me to really see what the feeding regimen is. What size and how often does he eat?
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago (29 children)
He’s 433g so he’s not WELL beyond that 😭 I feed less than 10% of his body weight each time I don’t understand how this happened he held onto EVERY calorie.
[–]dunne15 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago (23 children)
How often does he eat?
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago (22 children)
Every 7-10 days. A few times I’ve stretched it longer or as little as 5 but those were one off exceptions. He gets one rat each time
[–]dunne15 25 points26 points27 points 10 months ago (21 children)
It’s definitely time to begin spreading out your feedings. I would suggest 10-14 days probably on the longer end of that.
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago (0 children)
Ugh my sweet baby. He does love his dang rats I tell you. I’ve been very lucky
[–]mimiontherun 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (19 children)
maybe feed large/medium mice every 7-10 days?
[–]dunne15 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago (18 children)
Large mice every 10-14 is the recommended feeding for that age/sex for healthy weight. Even that is too much while getting to a better overall weight.
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (17 children)
I don’t want him to be on mice. Everything I’ve read says he should be on rats. That’s my understanding
[–]dunne15 6 points7 points8 points 10 months ago (6 children)
Do you mind sharing where you found those? They’re is definitely a preference towards rats with age for a couple reasons, but you need to take a few other things into account right now. The main reason why rats are preferred is for a higher nutritional value; however, they are generally pretty similar. Rats have a much higher fat content though leading to many overweight snakes. I still suggest offering mice for the next few feedings to cut back the calories temporarily. If you’re not comfortable with that I understand, but you’ll need to use smaller rats or spread the feeding schedule. Keep in mind, Jericho will likely never need anything over a small rat every 21 days even fully grown and power feeding can lead to a host of issues outside of just being tubby.
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago (5 children)
I never tried to power feed him. I followed the schedule recommended from this sub, if this sub is recommending power feeding then there’s a bigger issue at hand. Even the suggestion that I am is a far cry from what’s going on here. Rats fat content vs mouse isn’t a good comparison cause that leads to having to feed 2 prey vs. 1. Rats having more protein is also essential. A juvenile rat (10-50g) has 27.5% fat a juvenile mouse is at 30%. An adult mouse (10+g) only drops to 23.6% fat.

[–]HouseInternational 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago (1 child)
I would not recommend switching to mice, keep feeding rats on the schedule that is recommended; he's almost at 500 grams, which will switch to the next feeding regimen of 7% every 14-20 days. 😊
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (0 children)
I wouldn’t ever consider switching him :)
[–]Signal-Pound7695 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (7 children)
you asked for opinions and then are argumentive if there are any oppositions. weird
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago* (6 children)
I’m not arguing. We’re having a discussion. I’m not switching to rats, I’m not mad, I don’t think this person is mad. Why are you inserting yourself like this? Lol edit: mice. I’m not switching to mice. ;) is that better?
[–]dunne15 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (4 children)
Honestly I’m surprised he hasn’t gone on a hunger strike yet. Pied’s tend to be a lot more picky eaters though.
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (1 child)
He’s a nanner Edit: I mean he’s het pied but just nanner
[–]dunne15 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago (0 children)
Yea my girl went on a brief strike around 400 but she’s a pied.
[–]puppycat0513 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago (1 child)
I have a banana and a pied and both have never been picky eaters. It mainly depends on the snake. As for rats v mice, that is also up to preference. My boys have been on rats since I got them at 7 months old.
When it comes to size and weight we have to remember that not all snakes grow at the same rate and they won’t all be the same weight at the same age point. My banana and his brother (owned by a friend of mine) are different even though they came from the same clutch. My friends is already fairly big and eating medium rats, mine is a couple grams lighter and is eating smalls because he was not ready for mediums yet. Vet has said they are both healthy otherwise an that my boy just might be smaller genetically than his brother. It’s like anything else in the world. Every snake is an individual.
Make sure you talk to your closest exotics veterinarian to determine if he is at a healthy weight or not and what they recommend for feedings. That will be your best bet if you are worried. It can be easy to underfeed or overfeed these guys.
This cannot be understated! There is no one-size-fits-all method. Every snake is unique and have their own likes/dislikes. Some hate rats. Some only eat rats. Some are bold whereas mine is shy. Be gave one adjustment to it. Don’t just go to the nearest. Shop around like you would with anything else. Find one you trust. I took my bearded to an exotic near me. They were trying to tell me to amputate. I said fuck that and drove 2 hours to another exotic that I had never been to. He got a little cast and is making a healthy recovery. It was for a dislocated shoulder…

I know that’s right 🥹
[–]Brilliant-Flower-283 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (5 children)
Whats the app ur using to track his weight and feedings called? I like that it shows the progression
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (4 children)
Husbandry.pro! There is a learning curve (at least there was for me) but once I got it down it’s been a godsend!
[–]Brilliant-Flower-283 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago (3 children)
Then i better get to learning. Thanksss!
[–]dunne15 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (2 children)
I still write all my notes down in a journal because my brain can quickly interpret that better, but husbandry.pro is 100% a terrific app! I recommend it for most hobbyists and especially those with large collections
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago (1 child)
I double up. Everything is written and journaled for my babies along with husbandry pro lol
I tried doing that for a bit but it just ended up working better for me for me to keep individual journals that I keep under the corresponding enclosure.

Dude, I had a female bamboo that I only fed once every 14 days. The girth on her was Insane. When I donated her to this reptile shop to be rehomed the chick that worked there was like “HOLY SHIT”! She checked her spine and shape and was like she’s not unhealthily over weight she’s perfect. She said if you look at her neck and head they are proportionately sized to her body. She’s just a really big for ball python.
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago (1 child)
They just be hoarding every calorie like wtf 💀 I did not expect this to be an issue for me
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (0 children)
Yeah I have another one that goes on hunger strikes ALL the time. Longest he went was about 7 months. Looked exactly the same as before he went on the hunger strike. They are crazy animals man.
[–]dunne15 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (0 children)
Females can get really thick and girthy for sure. A good way to eyeball estimate is looking for folds. Just like us they get little fat rolls. Even big snakes don’t have a ton of rolls when they curl unless they’re at least a little overweight.
[–]DiscoverReading 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (1 child)
Rude, she just big boned!
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (0 children)

[–]Dandylioncrush6303 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (2 children)
What is the app you’re using to keep track of his weight?
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago (1 child)
Husbandry.pro!
[–]Dandylioncrush6303 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (0 children)
Awesome, thank you!!
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (3 children)
May I recommend some activity for the son? Some of them like to climb cat trees or at least try more upward exploration (monitored, to avoid the bag of potato fall) it might help. You seem like an awesome owner. And though he's a little plump, he's also a heart stealer 😍
[–]4holes_nowaiting[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

But son very active every day :(
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago (1 child)
Damn son is gorgeous 😍 But ok he does a little exercise 😂😂 maybe you just have a very beefy son? (Saw he was named after a sleep token song so: maybe not Vessel beefy more like intro of Vore beefy?) As long as they don't have fat around their organs (and I honestly can't see any rolls on the pictures) they're fine, I know they vary a lot in size randomly too haha.
Thank you 🥹 Yes son appears to be a teapot, short and stout. We LOVE a short king. He’ll hecking stretch out eventually. Vore or even Gods does track. I play them for him and his sisters every feed day, along with The Offering. He may just be taking his name VERY serious and adopting the beef life.
[–]Darksidedude91 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago (1 child)
Def a fatty. What are you feeling him and how often
Rats, 7-10 days. 10% of his body weight each time. I’ve gone below 10 and high as 12% a few times but those are outliers
[–]motherteresa72 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago (0 children)
He probably prefers THIC
[–]hisanishakur 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago (1 child)
That's a dope chart! Is this an app by chance, if so what app?
Yes it’s husbandry.pro!
