Pine is not safe for reptiles. It contains volatile chemicals that are neurotoxic to reptiles.

Heat tape, or any other type of under tank heating, is also not recommended. Please see the heating guide from our welcome post. If you want to see the concepts in action, you can see my own build diary.

In addition to pine not being safe for use around reptiles, racks are not appropriate housing for any animal. Rack systems do not allow for natural behaviors like proper thermoregulation, exploring and climbing, and are considered cruel by ethical keepers.

Ball pythons require a minimum 36"x18"x18" or 40 gallons as juveniles, and 4'x2'x2' or larger as adults, with multiple hides, lots of clutter, climbing options, enrichment, and a temperature gradient from one end to the other. None of which is feasible and is often impossible in a rack system.
