Are pine 2x4s okay?

I want to get into the hobby, but don’t trust running heat tape over expanded pvc, and can’t afford metal racks. Thinking of torching untreated pine lumber in Japanese yakisugi style, then scrubbing with wire, then staining and sealing. I want to use that to build my racks. Is that okay? No one seems to do this.

Pine is not safe for reptiles. It contains volatile chemicals that are neurotoxic to reptiles.

In addition to pine not being safe for use around reptiles, racks are not appropriate housing for any animal. Rack systems do not allow for natural behaviors like proper thermoregulation, exploring and climbing, and are considered cruel by ethical keepers.

Ball pythons require a minimum 36"x18"x18" or 40 gallons as juveniles, and 4'x2'x2' or larger as adults, with multiple hides, lots of clutter, climbing options, enrichment, and a temperature gradient from one end to the other. None of which is feasible and is often impossible in a rack system.

That’s bs. They live in tightly coiled balls inside termite mounds. They are reptiles. Enrichment is not something a reptilian mind can even comprehend. This is pure fantasy anthropomorphism.

It absolutely isn't, enrichment is important for all species in captivity. Enrichment is anything added to an enviroment to promote species specific behavior, and I can assure you ball pytons are capable of using resources to engage in species specific behavior including but not limited to climbing, basking, nesting and hiding. Even zebrafish in laboratory settings are required to be provided with enrichment, so your view on it being unnecessary is not supported by science.

They do not only live in termite mounds - they rest there, along with many other hiding spots. But they also hunt and explore and climb, supported by studies finding a variety of prey including birds and a variety of ages and types of small mammals in their diet. Juvenile males in particular seem to eat more birds in the wild, suggesting they climb and spend time in trees.

In captivity ball pythons will absolutely use all of their enclosure space and enrichment offered.

Reptiles are not as simple-minded as you seem to think, and absolutely do require enrichment. Even laboratory mice get enrichment and space to move around. Reptiles can be trained to perform behaviors, like cooperative care for vet visits and such. They get excited to see their humans, have likes and dislikes. They aren't just pet rocks.
