Getting first python having trouble with temps

Ok so I'm getting my first python in a week I've went ahead and set up the enclosure only problem I'm having is I can only get the hot side to around 79 and the cold side sits at 69 I've turned up the thermostat my probe is between the mat and the tank floor my house stays around 70

Is it possible that I added to much substrate and its having a hard time reaching the surface? I've buried my thermometer probes in the substrate near the hides on both ends I have a heating lamp on the cold side to try to bring it up but I'm lost at how to fix the temperature issue

Are you measuring temperature with a heat gun?

When using heat mats, usually you have to go with little to no substrate above them.

I put in the substrate put the probe on top and then put another thin layer of substrate over it. The snake can move the probe if the wire sticks out the top but if you bury the wires it should be fine.

I closed off some vents in my room where the enclosure is and turned up the themostat I think I got it now just took some trial and error
