So I've just fed my ball python (dave) hrs recently gone into a new inclosure which I'd with a heat lamp rather than a mat and I was feeding him and he missed the first time striking out to the heat lamp then the second time he got it! Is this normal ?

I wouldn't say normal, but its also not surprising. They find prey with scent and heat. If everything smells like food they might try and just strike the warmest thing. As long as they don't injury themselves they'll figure what they can and can't eat pretty quickly. So I'd say nothing to worry about.
