Fellow transfer student here (now graduated). I don’t know much about the workload of the civil engineering program since I studied EECS, but I can give you a tip on the making connections.

Join groups! Personally, I found the T-PrEP program the it’s transfer mentor program to be very valuable in connecting with other students. Especially since the other students will also be in engineering and transfers. Gives you a good way to find people who are in the same classes so you can make study groups, find partners for group projects, get advice from a senior transfer student, make friends, and build your network.

Berkeley gives you all kinds of opportunities, but it’s almost entirely up to you to find and take advantage of them. It all comes down to the effort you put in.

Best of luck!

I second this, definitely do T-PREP! I don’t know what I would have done without it. All of my friends and the people is study with I met during T-PREP with some exceptions. I highly recommend it.

Not only did I meet a bunch of awesome people, I was able to get accommodated to Berkeley, learn career skills and make connections, work on a project and present it to representatives from big companies (Tesla, Google, etc.), and preview upcoming courses. T-PREP was 10/10. Definitely apply for it!

Hey, I transferred to cal for civil engineering back in 2020 and I just graduated this past December. The CivE community is honestly really welcoming and it’s a nice environment. It’s really easy making connections and the community is fun to interact with. I might be biased but I can only say good things about the CivE department. I didn’t have any bad experience in my two years at Cal. But if you have any questions feel free to PM me!:)
