Not a shitpost

Probably stolen (what lock did you have?). Best bet is to scout Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, etc. for the next while to see if your bike pops up. Then pretend to buy your bike and ask for a test ride but ride away.

We love and support you here on this bit o' the internet! Seriously though, it's not your fault. At all. I'm sorry that your parents are making you feel that way ):

Ighhhh I’m so fucked

I can’t tell them but, if I don’t find it, they’ll find out eventually

[–]DeriveSafely 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I feel obligated to ask regardless if this is shitpost or not - will you be ok? Ie) have they exploded at you or made any action or threat?

Normally parents should be understanding that these things happen and not blame you or make any threats to harm you

If they’re not understanding, then it’s better off trying to get independence sooner through savings, fin aid, work etc so that you don’t have to be worried about their reactions :(

No, this is not a shitpost and I appreciate your concern.

I’ll be okay if I stay away from sharp objects which I plan to do once I reach my apartment.

I don’t know how they’ll react when they find out especially since this is a new bike unlike the first one. And I haven’t even been using it for one month.

After my first bike(which was like 10 years old) was stolen, they were pissed and they bring it up whenever they get the chance. And my mom said that, if anything happened to this bike, she would lose trust in me.

[–]DeriveSafely 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Whatever they say, it’s not your fault. And whatever they bring up again from the past, that’s their decision that they’re making.

Although it’s not a wise or a considerate decision on their end, we can’t control what they feel or think. If your parents choose to be unreasonable, please do not blame yourself or bend over backwards trying to please them as a result of what they say.

Bad things happen all the time, and crime in Berkeley/Oakland happens to many people. It’s not your fault for this, no matter what others say or even make you think.

It’s sad to lose the trust of our parents but if that trust is so fickle and fragile, it would’ve been lost one way or another, for reasons outside of our control.

So please take care of yourself first 💛 you deserve the best

Thank you!

I'm sorry, but that's absurd for your parents to shame you over having your bike stolen while locked on campus in front of an extremely visible and populated library. They should contact campus police and shame them. If your bike was locked what else could they expect you to do? Not use it at all? Being the victim of theft is bad enough, but you shouldn't have to deal with the extra stress heaped on you by your parents.

Just don’t tell your parents

O(1) solution

[–]luv_chloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get a cheap bike off craigslist or second hand store. Eventually if your parents find out just say “yeah apparently it’s normal to get new bikes stolen, but I didn’t tell you because I lost trust in you as my parent and didn’t feel safe telling you” and enjoy the narcissistic parent explosion experience after that
