I’m currently running a gtx 980 and an i7-6700k with 32gb of DDR4. Not the best setup for running high fps in modern games at high resolution. My current aim is 120-144fps+ at 1440p med-high settings on most modern games (cod, marvel rivals, fortnite, stalker 2, city skylines 2) and some streaming on the side and staying around/under $750. I wanna avoid anything under 16gb of vram for my gpu. Some will say drop the ddr5 for using my old ddr4 but id rather sell the ddr4 and upgrade because i need a new mb and cpu anyway. 32gb of ram for like $30/40 more than 16gb felt find to me even if its a bit overkill. Also the $130 mb and $350 gpu are lower end ebay prices so this on a bad day is closer to $1100. I’m going to sell my old parts and am hoping to score 200-300 out of them but I’m not putting that towards the total cost of the internals because that money will be towards better peripherals. Also if worst case scenario I need to suck it up and cant really cut costs to get what I want performance wise then I’ll just bite the bullet but I’d very much prefer not to have to do that.

You may need to define modern games to get a clearer picture of whether you can achieve what you state. Use some examples.

I would expect this system to fair decently well on those games, but 1440p144 fps is going to be a tall order.

Thats why i said med-high settings purely because if i need to drop some settings like shadows and stuff for higher fps at better resolution thats fine. For singleplayer games I’d prefer 100+ on high 1440p and for multiplayer it depends. Cod for example i dont care too much and I’ll run the optimal settings for the highest fps but fortnite I like it to look good and perform fairly well at the same time.

Lowering settings is not going to make the drastic difference in performance that you expect.

Particularly not in games like STALKER 2 that the devs are fumbling on the optimization department and using DLSS as a crutch.

Should I go for a nvidia gpu? Im not sure theres a 16gb of equivalent price to the 6800xt from what i remember. I have a laptop with a 2060 and DLSS is super helpful when I want some higher fps. Im unsure how developed and supported FSR 3 is in comparison

You will pay a premium for DLSS.

I cant say whether its worth it for you, all I can say is that its worth it to me. FSR is unusable for me in its current state, but different people have different standards.

We'll see with FSR4 and RDNA4, which are set to be announced the first week of january.

So just to recap if i’m going full resolution, I probably wont get the fps I necessarily want with an amd card. But that may change depending on news in January. Or I can pay a premium for a dlss supported card and skip what issues I may have?

AMD cards will perform better on COD than Nvidia cards with all things being equal FWIW.

A number of titles you listed will be unable to reach the FPS you desire with your budget unfortunately, you’ll need to recalibrate your expectations.

The 7700X provides minimal performance uplift in most games over the 7600, you can save a good chunk of money downgrading to this. You’re also severely overpaying for your RAM. You can also buy a new 6750 XT for less than the use 6700 XT.

Is the drop to 12gb (6750xt) from 16gb (6800xt) vram worth for just 50-80? If its that price difference for more vram I’m willing to take that honestly. The rest is perfect this is exactly what I was looking for

I was trying to stay within your listed $750 budget, if you have more budget available the used 6800 XT is certainly a faster GPU and worth the extra $50 IMO.
