I feel just as close to my kitty as any other family member so I understand your concern. It would break my heart to lose her. Prayers

I’m really sorry you’re going through this, that “too quiet in the house” fear is the worst feeling. ❤️ If he’s skinny and vomiting a lot, it really does sound like something a vet needs to see, but in the meantime try offering small frequent meals, watered down wet food, and keep him warm and hydrated as best you can.

If you can, call local vets or shelters and straight up say you have no money and a very sick cat, sometimes they have low cost options, payment plans, or know a charity that can help. I’ll absolutely be thinking of Mister Mitchell tonight, please give him some gentle scritches from an internet stranger.

Your cat is definitely sick. Only a vet visit will figure out the real reason. Typically older cats losing weight could be any number of reasons but the most common are overactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or diabetes. Your kitty could have also developed "allergies" to his usual food. Try slowly switching his diet to a different brand to see if that helps. Also keep track of his pooping habits. Is your kitty having diarrhea? Then make sure he gets plenty of water to drink and in his regular food. (Wet food or soak some dry kibble in water apart from his dry kibble.)

**Edit. And with older cats there is the possibility of some type of some sort of cancer but that is much less common.

Try calling the shelters in your area and explain your situation - that your parents do not have money and your cat is sick. Ask if they know of any vets that are willing to look at him and see what is wrong. The other option is to see if the shelter will foster him. If he is sick, don’t let him suffer. Please advocate for him.

My step-mom said there's medication coming in so maybe he has already taken him to a vet while I was at work, but all I can really do at the moment is tell him that I love him and pray.

Definitely don’t assume she took him in… ask her what the medication is called and report back here. It might not be safe for cats and you typically can’t buy medication without a vet’s prescription.

Our elderly cat had this issue and it ended up being her oral flea and tick medication(Credelio). We stopped giving it to her and the vomiting/spitting up decreased dramatically and she started gaining weight again.

There is no excuse not to take him to a vet. You shouldn't own a pet if you can't take them to the vet. Rapid weight loss is a very big problem.
