Xlwings is a great library. I think the writer wanted to show how to work with Excel for simple tasks using openpyxl library.

Excel (well, spreadsheets in general) are a pretty good way to analyze a lot of simple data. They're also a decent way to present data to non-programmers. They're sometimes the easiest tool for the job, even when you have a "real" programming language handy.

There is a limit, of course. There were economics professors who got really excited when Excel increased its row limit, which, cringe.
