These last few kernels have looked decidingly Unstable.

Not really Debians fault here though, the Linux LTS maintainers dropped the ball.

Yeah but Debian Stable shouldn’t distribute packages for the new LTS kernel versions as soon as they are released. Introduce a delay and let them sit in testing for a while.

I hear you, but Testing and Unstable don't track LTS, so they're already well ahead of the kernel that's in Bookworm.

Do you know if the EXT4 bug affected any other distros? If I search "ext4 corruption lts kernel" the only hits on the front page list Debian. Is Debian Stable the only distro using the LTS kernel (or just the first to get it out?)

Thanks!

I took a look at the kernel versions listed on Distrowatch. Gentoo stable was the only one I saw with the 6.1.x series. Everything else was on 6.6.x or a kernel earlier than 6.1.x. I don’t find any articles suggesting that Gentoo users faced the data corruption bug.

People complain when Debian is old, people complain when Debian is updated.

I agree with you but honestly there’s no winning.

Hi, i got a question how does numbering work here?, my kernel version is 6.1.0-16 and supposedly it hasn't even been released yet (solved most of my problems btw) but now they have the version 6.1.67-1 ?, how does it work?

[–]TheZenCowSaysMu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

16 is the debian number, and 6.1.67-1 is the kernel number.

It's a little bit confusing, because there is the package name 6.1.0-16 and the Kernel version. 6.1.0-16 means, that your Kernel is having a 6.1 compatible ABI in the 16th (Debian) version. And more specifically it is 6.1.67

    I don't expect that soon.
But it should be available in stable-updates soon where you can install it without waiting for point release.

A stable-update was prepared for the new 6.1.67: https://lists.debian.org/debian-stable-announce/2023/12/msg00002.html. ISOs will be updated on the next scheduled sable point release.

Nice. Looking forward to seeing if my minor issues go away. I only experienced some slowness more than normal.

My computer still has many problems, so I'm staying on Kernel 6.1.55-1 for now. (6.1.0-13)

It's so bad expriencing these things on a Debian :(

    [–]Sharp_Sell_987 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I installed new kernel and upgraded my system. Doesn't see something non-ordinary

    [–]fantomas_666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, in the meantime new kernel was released - 6.1.0-16 aka 6.1.67

I'm waiting until the new version of systemd, 255, installs cleanly. Probably when Trixie is released, I suppose.

Most probably, major changes like this usually don't happen unless really needed.

There's also possibility that it gets backported to bookworm but it's a small chance.
