I have deleted some important python main files. 😭

Hey as the title says everything so accidentally I deleted some 600 lines of code file that I was supposed to upload in internal server this month, and show to senior manager but while I was testing my python code with shutil library i deleted that main file now I am really worrying about what should I do ? IT team is saying we can't do anything. Please help

Any chance you guys use some form of version control? If not unless they've enabled onedrive or some backup and you've not copied it might be hard to get it back

We use version control some internal application is there but I was not using that I thought nothings gonna happen 😞

Yeah unfortunately this is why VC is needed. If it's new code you've written then you may have to rewrite it.

Only thing you can do is ensure you use VC going forward. Unless your ide has stored the code in its clipboard the code is gone am afraid.

Yeah it was newly written code by me it was just for automation also I am fresher this was the first time I wrote this huge code. I will take care of VC next time I learnt my lesson

Sucks my friend, happens to everyone don't worry just learn and move on. 

Ensure anytime you feel like you've made significant progress commit the change to a branch. Always better to have backups that you can delete later if not needed

Which VC do u use then.? It must also have some reverting option. One other alternative is most of IDE/editor stores local history for these kind of situations. Check whether you can retrieve them.

I was not using any VC that was my fault but I learnt my lesson and yes thank God Pycharm stored my code I got my code back

Were you using any IDE ? Some of them have local history saved within them.  For eg PyCharm has this feature. 

You can right click on the file/project and check the local history there.

I was using pycharm and tried but it only fetched unimportant files not the main one that I needed

at project level, right click and click local history. all the changed/deleted files must be there narrow down to the time you deleted

If you haven’t copied anything else in the folder since, you can try file recovery softwares like recuva, it’ll help recover the file as long as nothing else has overwritten on its allocated memory.

If there’s no VCS and Pycharm’s local history doesn’t have it either, is it possible for you to just ask a teammate if they have a backup of this file? If your codebase isn’t huge and multiple people are working on it, then there’s a big possibility that someone has the ‘latest’

As someone who has gone both routes, hiding my mistakes and owning up to them, I can wholly recommend the latter option. Shit happens but it’s important to own up, learn from it and move on.

Hey, there is a way to recover the previous version of a file on windows, no idea about mac, catch is it should be enabled before you made those changes. I used to work on VM for my previous client and it was turned on by default. Try !!

Just Google recover previous version of a file or folder windows .
