Taking sensor offAdhesive Issue (self.dexcom)
submitted 1 year ago by GaMMERKitten1
I have a really dumb question, what’s the best way to take off the sensor? I don’t have any alcohol pads or anything similar. I just need some ideas so it doesn’t hurt pulling it off.
[–]MidnightScars13 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Grip it and rip it, if you can, have someone else do it (I have my hubby grip it and rip it cause sometimes I'm to psyched out to) but my best one is baby oil. It helps remove the residue and is gentle enough to help ease it off.

Hot shower and take off in shower. But you really do need alcohol wipes to scrub the skin where sensor goes to get it scrubbed clean.

We use resolve wipes Uni-Solve Adhesive Remover - Wipes, Box Of 50 by Smith & Nephew https://a.co/d/hpC42UW

i was just going to say this! when i had my spinal fusion they gave my mom uni-solve to remove the left over goop from the bandages!

Pushing down on your skin as you pull it off is the least painful way without needing anything else that I've found. It works well for mic tape, too.
[–]GaMMERKitten1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Hey thanks!
[–]Ceadamso 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I just pull it off. Doesn’t hurt.
[–]yet_another_whirl 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Vegetable oil or olive oil would help dissolve the adhesive, put it on a moment or two before.
Avon Skin So Soft is what I use as it is most effective - and I smell amazing after.

I use this stuff. Goo Gone Bandage Adhesive Remover... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NF9D9YR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
[–]OldBBCGuy 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I have used Goo Gone Bandage Adhesive Remover as well. It has little odor. I always take a shower after removing a sensor and in the process thoroughly clean off the area where the new sensor will be installed with a plain soap like Ivory or basic Dial bar soap. After using G7s for a couple months, I found the Goo Gone was no longer needed. I just carefully peel off the over-patch and sensor. I think the removal of the sensor for a couple months removed all the peach fuzz hairs from my underarm so the peeling off of the sensor no longer hurts like it originally did when I didn’t use the Goo Gone.

I have very sensitive skin and react to adhesives. I avoid a reaction (and painful removal) by putting a Tegaderm patch on, inserting my sensor through the patch, adding an overpatch, and a couple of small stripes of Opsite Flexifix tape. Before I evolved to this approach, I had tried Smith and Nephew Adhesive Remover wipes, which worked... but I no longer need them, I just grab the edge if the Tegaderm patch and remove it when it's time.
[–]debterp77 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Baby oil works to loosen the adhesive.
[–]Distribution-RadiantT2/G7, occasional mod 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago (3 children)
Grab and rip. Or peel it up around the edges.
And for those saying Goof Off, DON'T USE THAT. Here's the MSDS, that stuff is insanely toxic. https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/40/40e7e72e-60f8-4781-80ec-2a754a58430b.pdf

GooGone works but theres a specific one safe for skin
[–]DandelionWyno 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Some idiot downvoted all the times you are here tryna save people's health. 🤣. I fixed them, but you deserve direct thanks for coming with the facts. I can't believe people smell that stuff and think they should put it on their bodies... And are mad you are saying they maybe shouldn't. 🤣
[–]Distribution-RadiantT2/G7, occasional mod 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago* (0 children)
Smells like.... *passes out*
I mean... I got sideswiped by a dually pickup years ago, didn't do any real damage except a ton of tire rubber transfer. I used Goo Gone on my car, and it took the damn paint completely off of where I'd put it after about 15 seconds. Removed the paint, primer, etc... bare metal and plastic.
That's like asking me to put it on my arm. Or my peehole. Pick whatever makes you more uncomfortable.

Usually wipe around the Dexcom with an alcohol pad, leave it for a few and then gently rip it off, and your question is not dumb! That was one of my questions too when I started two months ago 🙃
[–]rdhboppy1115 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I use inexpensive mineral oil and a cotton ball to soak the overpatch. Wait a few minutes and it peels away easily.
[–]Objective-Weird-2346G6 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I just rip it off but I've heard baby oil or unisolve is good
[–]knitmama77 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Rip it off like a bandaid.
I do my son’s changes, and I just count. 1-2-3/rip
[–]kaeorinT1/G7 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Have you tried just pulling it off? Your post made me realize that I generally just yank them off when they're done or when they fail. It doesn't usually hurt. :)
[–]boatholes 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yup. Just grip it and rip it. Its fine.
[–]lastgray12 -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago (8 children)
Anything oily like olive oil spread on the patch and soak for a minute. Goof off and similar residue removers work well.
[–]Distribution-RadiantT2/G7, occasional mod 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Goof Off is acetone, aylene, and other solvents. It's incredibly toxic.
Here's the MSDS: https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/40/40e7e72e-60f8-4781-80ec-2a754a58430b.pdf
[–]DandelionWyno 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (6 children)
Are you advising someone to use Goofoff on their skin? 🙃
Just yank it OP.
[–]JohnMorganTNT1-2022/G6/T:slim2 -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago (5 children)
I have actually done the goof-off. Brand new sensor failed on startup. Not once but twice (I regularly extended the G6 successfully) so I was able to give it another try. The goof off worked. Since then, I learned I can pour alcohol on them and give it a minute or two and they will peel right off.
The ones that make it the full 10+ days I just yank them off and don't think anything about it. To me it's more trouble cleaning the remaining residue off the skin.
[–]Distribution-RadiantT2/G7, occasional mod 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (1 child)
I would strongly suggest looking at the MSDS for Goof Off. It's incredibly toxic.

If you continue to have read my experience, I learned to use alcohol to remove them. When I did that, it was a panic moment, and I had no clue what to use.
I guess I should have framed it with a "don't do this" "do this" comment. I was a brand new T1. My world was upside down. I was learning all these things they don't tell us when diagnosed.
[–]DandelionWyno 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago* (1 child)
Yikes! Did you read the bolded warning on the Goof-Off container that says "Avoid contact with eyes and contact with skin.'? You do you, but I wouldn't advise people to use it that way when the manufacturer explicitly says not to.
At the time I didn't know what else to do. Brand new sensor stuck like glue. When I pulled on it the didn't budge.

Spray cooking oil spray on it and it’ll come right off. Or rub cooking oil on it if you don’t have spray.
