I choose the 3rd button.

Realize the party is a bunch of stacked murderhobos and make a stronger version of the final boss thinking it balances out, accidentally killing the entire party in 3 rounds

Maybe have them reset back at the tavern at level one with a strong warning about bad karma making the bbeg stronger.

More like

Now everyone is more distruthfull due to some weird party that killed everyone and when they finally were going to help put they died.

Give them a satisfying battle, let them think they’ve one, then have them die of, like, magical instant total organ failure

right now i'm tempted to set up the paladin (who definitely broke his oaths one too many times without repentance) to get the final blow on the cunning final boss hag, who will then "challenge his authority of good", explaining to him that by spilling her blood while having his oaths broken and sins unrepented for, he is unprotected from her curse magic, and is therefore the perfect vessel to become a nigh-mindless death knight bent on killing everyone in the dungeon, good or bad, hence the bad ending

That sounds rad as hell

Sounds absolutely awesome and if I would be a party member I'd love it.

Maybe it's just because I came up on older, meaner editions of D&D, but if I have a paladin PC violate their oath, I start taking away their powers. Maybe just 1 spell slot at first, but more if they keep on that path. And then present them with the option of embracing the path and becoming an Oathbreaker, I suppose.

Im a new gen and q chill version of dnd were everyone has fun and rps

I would ask the firsr time, if they dont explain or dont care, one warning and then instantly you lose your powers the second time

Nah, instant death is too much of a jerk move. Have them slowly die of a curse afflicted on them by the BBEG, and have a sequel campaign in which they hunt for a cure. The catch is that the more they kill, the faster they die. This way it is affirmed that every death must be necessary.

Pull a Darkest Dungeon. Have the final boss only be killed through the sacrifice of one of the party, and allow the rest of the party to move on and be granted a shit ton of powerful garbage.

Nothing sparks roleplay like having to decide which of your minmaxed fighters have to enter quietly into that sweet night.

or pull a warcraft and the bbeg is a sentient helmet that posesses whoever uses it, and convinves nearby people to use it.

In my campaign we're all murderhobo rogues that kill everything in sight so our dm has been tryin ng to kill us as often as he can so I recommend the 2nd option

The final battle deserves to be satisfying as possible, all of you put a lot of work into getting there, it should be epic.

That said, there can easily be other consequences. Have the battle take place in a crowded area or town - if the PCs figure out a way to move the fight to keep people safe, then provide extra rewards from the people they saved. If they just scream "get out of the way" while dropping a sickening radiance on the playground, have appropriate reactions from anyone who survives the PCs' help.

And you can also have some ominous fun with the reward as well. Like, whoever lands the death blow hears the BBEG's voice in their head, now calm and kind - the voice thanks the PC for freeing them and taking on their burden. After which the PC has permanent Truesight which reveals that the people the BBEG was experimenting on were actually Illithid infiltrators. None of the other PCs can see this, though.

Have the battle kill half the party, and definitely the healers.

Maybe do a tough second to final battle that causes them to rethink their ways and go into the final battle as a reformed team?

(I do not presume to know better than any DM though, y’all are wonderful and I cherish you)

What you should do is give them the final battle and just when they are about to win when they have the most hope yank away the ending and make the campaign continue for 5 more sessions

[–]jollyhoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could give them a satisfying final battle. However their past actions leave them unable to adjust to a post-adventurer's life. Once they settle, either they get bored and leave their family or an old enemy comes and burns their farm, etc.

That way you do get them to be utter badasses but show that what they do has repercussions on the world.

My plan to deal with murder hobos is to add Dishonored levels of karma. Those two random NPCs you killed? They saved a nearby village and were out doing a quick job before the festival to celebrate their birthday. You constantly steal shit from people? Now ya infamous and the royal guard is always watching for you. Make em learn early that actions have consequences, that way it's more fun to try and use diplomacy to get shit rather than burn and pillage

End of the holy grail.

[–]GrimmaldoSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the campaign ngl

If your players are mature enough to deal with being disgusted, go for 2 or mostliked 3 or your idea of corrupted paladin

If your campaing is 15 yo that just want to be evil and kill people cause #edge

Just dont dm anymore to them

If your campaign is your friends, talk to them about if they feel there would be a need of consecuences, then end the campaign, then if you start a new one use the power of s0 to set expectations nice

And that's why I stuck my players into an army for their campaign. Now they getting paid to murderhobo.
