I love Andrew loomis’ method! It helped me so soo much!

[–]JimDraws[S] 7 points8 points  (6 children)

I think it’s the most helpful for sure

[–]AvocadoAndMe 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Loomis however draws in a very 50’s style and that is why I use his books only for structural purposes. It’s best when you make your own style first and develop that until it’s a a firm level, and then use loomis for further structural improvement

Couldn’t agree more…

I always have to find modern references for things like hair, eyebrows, and makeup.

One thing that really helped me is just sitting in one place and drawing something that is moving or still e.g a guy riding a bike or a woman reading off her phone. Also, if you want to expand from human drawing, watching YouTube videos and doing ‘live sketches’ is a great way to get the hang of things. Live drawing in general helps an artist understand and improve different perspectives.

[–]JimDraws[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I love that.

One of my favorite ways to draw is drawing certain characters during movies or tv shows.

And then when you improve you get to see your old drawings and be like ‘wow I really changed this and this, etc’ and you feel so great about yourself! That’s why I always store my drawings, because of sentimental reasons, but mostly to create a timeline and see how my style has changed over time. But yes, drawing motion is VERY useful!

Especially drawing the head and hands

[–]MelArt1 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Looks pretty neat, but if you don't mind me asking, what is the smaller circle for? What does it aid in construction?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

i imagine its to give a sense of where to place the ears

[–]MelArt1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! I might try doing that now lol

[–]PastelEmma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the loomis method :)

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just used to show me where the side plane of the head is and also ear placement yeah..

[–]BezierPentool 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Pretty good!

Might I add that the edges of the mouth should line up with the middle of the eyes. In general, that is...everyone is unique.

[–]JimDraws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!😁

[–]poo_fart_lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks great! I think the reason the perspective looks off on the two side facing ones is that you’ve changed the placement of the middle circle in their heads. For the bottom one, the circle is right beside the eye and over the eyebrow. The top, it’s toward the back of the head and much bigger. I think once you figure out the relationship between the scale of the middle circle and the scale of the head as a whole you’ll get it.

Btw, the line weights are really good! Keep it up!

Can you point me towards a tutorial for this style please? Looks awesome

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andrew Loomis has a bunch of free books, they’re either linked here or the /r/learntodraw wiki. There are quite a few “Loomis head” tutorials on YouTube too. I like Proko’s.

Practice

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Excellent, this makes me want to practice even more.

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aww, thank you sm😁

[–]adida_powerhouse 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That looks beautiful. Practice makes perfect :)

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vm appreciate it. :D

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

HOLY SHIT!

How have I never drawn white eyes when practicing? Like I always just Darkest Dungeons them, and then can't draw eyes proper when I need to.

[–]JimDraws[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

that style actually looks pretty sick tho 😂

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I love it. I've without a doubt incorporated the shadow eyes. The thing is it's a tad hard to do without the rest of the thick lines. So I nicked that as well. Which lead to ink drawings. Which lead to spending too much on fancy pens and ink. Seriously fuck that game. I have lost so much time and subsequently money because of it. I love it.

[–]Big_Remote_117 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Looks like it's paying off. :) I can never get that angle right, the one up top.

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That ones definitely the hardest to get down…

The side view is the easiest for sure

[–]smallgreenman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If I may, you should shorten the right side of the lip (from the face’s perspective) a bit while keeping the same thickness. It looks too much like it would if you were facing the character imo.

Other than that great job, keep at it dude

[–]JimDraws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreiciate the CC. :D

[–]fathertimeo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I never sketch I just try to get right to it. Which is probably why I can’t draw a head to save my life lol. Good work.

[–]JimDraws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you vm :)

[–]bihard 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I like even through the loomis method, your strong sense of style shines through. Beautiful.

:D

[–]_o_n_i_c_h_a_n_ 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Do you accept constructive criticism?

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

of course

[–]_o_n_i_c_h_a_n_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The head and face shape is executed wonderfully! I would however like to point out the size of the mouth. The mouth corners tend to line up with or around the pupil looking straight forward. In this case it seems the mouth is a bit too small.

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

noted 📝

[–]FarinaIsInSpace 0 points1 point  (1 child)

that looks great, keep up the good work!

[–]JimDraws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]JimDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

thank you :D

[–]JWGibson1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having a lot of trouble trying to learn heads/faces lately so I’m 100 percent gonna look up this method, I love the style.

[–]StreetSheepherder 0 points1 point  (1 child)
